Levels 4 and 5

These higher levels of autonomy are not commercially available but offer a clearer view of autonomous vehicles' capabilities.

Level 4 vehicles are capable of full autonomous performance. Their systems can gather data from other vehicles to adjust to their surroundings. Even in difficult driving conditions, human drivers don’t need to take control of the vehicle but can if they want to.

At Level 5, a vehicle’s driving system performs all driving tasks on any roadway or driving condition that can be managed by a human driver. In fact, a human driver or occupant is not necessary. Because these vehicles do not require a steering wheel or brake or gas pedals, they may be designed without them.
