Buying Advice

Last Updated: January 9, 2020

Slipping Sales: While the Pilot sold in the top quarter of the competitive midsize SUV segment, sales slowed 15.4 percent in 2019 compared to the prior year. Popular competitors like the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Toyota Highlander outsold the Pilot by over 50 percent.

Slightly Above-Average Prices: A base Pilot starts at $31,550, which is about $700 above average for the class. Keep in mind that the Pilot comes standard with a V6 engine, while most competitors start with a four-cylinder, so the Pilot gives you a bit more power for your money. Be careful with your trim and options selections, as a fully-loaded Pilot can easily approach $50,000. This isn’t uncommon in the segment, though.

Time to Buy: With weakening sales, now’s a good time to try negotiating for a deal on a Pilot. Regardless of market conditions, the Pilot was a finalist for our 2019 Best 3-row SUV for Families award, so it’s worth a test drive. Make sure to check out our Honda deals page for this month’s lease or finance offers, as they may help you save money. If a low price is your top priority, consider the Kia Sorento, which also has three rows of seats and starts roughly $5,000 below the Pilot. Plus, the Sorento was named the 2019 Best 3-Row SUV for the Money. Check out our Kia deals page for this month’s finance and lease offers.
