Buying Advice

Last Updated: October 8, 2020

Slipping Sales: Compared to the same period last year, Honda dealerships have moved 13.4 percent fewer models to date in 2020. While it’s currently selling among the top five of the highly-competitive midsize SUV segment, class leaders like the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ford Explorer are outselling the Honda by over 60 percent.

Slightly Above-Average Prices: A base Pilot starts at $32,250, which is about $800 above the average price for SUVs in the class. Keep in mind the Pilot comes standard with a V6 engine, while most competitors start with a four-cylinder, so the Pilot gives you a bit more motor for your money. Be careful with your trim and options selections though, as a fully-loaded Pilot can easily approach $50,000 (not uncommon in this segment).

Time to Buy: With slow sales, now’s a good time to try negotiating with a salesperson for a deal on a Pilot. Make sure to check out our Honda deals page for this month’s lease or finance incentives, as they may help you save money. If you are willing to shop around, consider the Hyundai Palisade which has a similar starting price and three rows of seating, but ranks much higher than the Pilot. It was also a finalist for our 2020 Best 3-Row SUV for Families award, meaning it’s a must-have on your test drive list. Check out our Hyundai deals page for this month’s finance and lease offers.
