2012 Honda Pilot Review

Reviewers said the 2012 Honda Pilot has a comfortable ride and an adult-sized third row, but its cabin materials feel somewhat cheap.

Pros & Cons

  • Adult-friendly third row
  • Cheap interior materials
  • Spongy brakes and long stopping distances

2012 Honda Pilot Overview

The 2012 Honda Pilot has a standard V6 engine that pleased some critics with its smooth and strong power delivery. Still, others noted that the Pilot is less powerful than many competing three-row SUVs. A five-speed automatic transmission is standard, and most test drivers said it rarely is hunting for the right gear. Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is available. The Pilot gets up to an EPA-estimated 18/25 mpg city/highway, which is slightly better than what many V6-powerd rivals get. Some auto writers mentioned that the Pilot has long stopping distances and that soft springs cause a fair amount of body roll. Still, others said it offers handling that’s composed, as well as a compliant ride over bumpy roads.

Test drivers wrote that the 2012 Honda Pilot’s cabin features lots of cubbies and compartments for storing smaller items. Still, some critics disliked the amount of hard plastic surfaces in the Pilot’s cabin. The front- and second-row seats are supportive and spacious, according to test drivers. They added that even the third row is adult-friendly, which is a rare compliment in this class. A seven-speaker stereo and an auxiliary input are standard. Bluetooth, navigation, a 10-speaker stereo system, a rear-seat entertainment system and tri-zone automatic climate control are available. The Pilot has 87 cubic feet of cargo space, which is typical for the class, though SUVs like the Chevrolet Traverse and Mazda CX-9 offer more room for cargo.

Other SUVs to Consider

Reviewers said that the 2012 Dodge Durango’s standard V6 provides enough power for most situations, and they liked the Durango’s nimble handling. The Durango also won points for its attractive, upscale interior.

The 2012 Chevrolet Traverse offers exceptional cargo space for the class, and some test drivers said it has a spacious third row. The Traverse also pleased critics with its eye-catching interior design and comfortable ride.
