2016 Honda Odyssey Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2016 Honda Odyssey was new.

Interior: 8.8

The automotive press reports the 2016 Honda Odyssey's cabin is filled with soft-touch materials, and it is solidly built compared to some competitors. They note the Odyssey's versatile interior and family-friendly features, like the HondaVAC and the multi-function second-row seats. Test drivers say the front seats are comfortable and the second row is roomy. The climate and audio controls have a straightforward arrangement, according to critics, and there are many small-item storage spaces throughout the cabin.

  • "Honda's 2016 Odyssey minivan may be the most flexible vehicle a family can own. It not only can accommodate up to eight passengers, the ingenious second row can be configured to host three child booster seats. There's also an available in-car vacuum for when Cheerios and Goldfish escape tiny hands." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The most notable difference between the Odyssey and its competitors is its interior build quality. The seats, dash, storage compartments and trim in the Odyssey are all surprisingly well-constructed. Every surface in the Odyssey looks and feels sturdy." -- AutoTrader
  • "Odyssey's interior is artfully designed and nicely appointed, with many soft-touch surfaces." -- Consumer Guide (2013)

The base 2016 Odyssey has seats for seven in three rows, while higher trims seat up to eight. Power-adjustable front seats are standard, and leather upholstery, heated front seats and multi-function second-row seats are optional. The multi-function second row includes a middle seat that can slide forward and a wide-mode that allows the outboard seats to slide to the side to increase shoulder room. The front seats are comfortable, critics write, and the driver's seat is well-placed for accessing the center stack controls. Reviewers add the second row is wide enough to keep adults comfortable on long journeys. They also like that the middle seat can slide forward to place a child in a safety seat within parents' reach, or it can be removed altogether to make an aisle to the third row. They say that the third row offers a decent amount of room.

  • "The driver's seat and driving position are comfortable and commanding, and the controls are understandable and within easy reach." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Particularly noteworthy is the multifunction second-row seat that can be adjusted to create a middle aisle or side aisle for easier third-row access. On EX and higher trim levels, the center portion of the second-row bench can slide forward more than 5 inches to put the youngest passenger's car seat within easy reach of mom or dad." -- Edmunds (2015)
  • "It can seat six adults in comfort, eight in a pinch with an easy-to-access third row." -- Boston Globe (2014)
  • "All the seats are comfortable when compared with the competition. The driver's seat sits upright a bit, like in most minivans. The second-row seats are nice and wide, so adults will be comfortable on road trips, and the third row has plenty of room for angst-ridden teens who want to be as far from the parental units as possible." -- Cars.com (2011)

Interior Features

The 2016 Honda Odyssey comes standard with a rearview camera, a seven-speaker audio system, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, a USB port and an 8-inch infotainment display. Optional features include power sliding doors, tri-zone automatic climate control, push-button start, a rear-seat entertainment system, the HondaVAC built-in vacuum, satellite radio, HD Radio, a 12-speaker surround-sound system and an upgraded dual-screen infotainment system with navigation. Available driver assistance features include front and rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning, lane departure warning and Honda's LaneWatch passenger-side blind-spot camera.

Test drivers report that the physical buttons for climate and audio controls are intuitively arranged. They praise home theater-like quality provided by the rear-seat entertainment system and surround-sound system and add that the HondaVAC is a useful tool for keeping the Odyssey clean.

  • "What better way to take a little piece of home on the road than with a first-class home-theater experience. Don't like movies? Use the HDMI port for gaming consoles or toss the wireless headsets and let the Dolby 5.1 surround-sound system convert the Odyssey into a mini rolling concert hall." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The large touchscreen included on all but the base LX model serves as a rearview camera display and provides access to audio system controls, including popular apps like Pandora. The remaining controls are sensibly arranged and clearly labeled in a way that makes everything very user-friendly." -- Edmunds (2015)
  • "[The built-in vacuum cleaner] has enough strength to remove all the spilled sand from feet, towels, chairs, and umbrellas after a day at the beach." -- Boston Globe (2014)
  • "… though buttons and knobs for the sound system and HVAC are numerous, they're at least logically arranged." -- Left Lane News (2014)

With 38.4 cubic feet of cargo room behind the third row, 93.1 cubic feet behind the second row and 148.5 cubic feet behind the front row, the 2016 Odyssey offers more cargo space than nearly every competitor. While reviewers agree the third-row seats are very easy to fold into the floor, they note the second-row seats are heavy and must be removed from the Odyssey to fully utilize all available cargo space. Critics like the numerous small-item storage spaces throughout the cabin, including an optional built-in cooler. A power liftgate is available.

  • "The 2016 Honda Odyssey uses every part of its generous interior space. The 3rd-row 'Magic Seat' splits 60/40, folding into the floor with one pull. … If you need small-item storage, there are bins aplenty, and we lost track of how many cup and bottle holders there are." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The downside to the design of those second-row seats (55 pounds each) quickly becomes apparent when you discover they must be removed and stored to make full use of the Odyssey's 148.5 cubic feet of total cargo capacity." -- Edmunds (2015)
  • "Stowage space aside, the Odyssey's cabin boasts numerous cupholders, a removable center console with a trash bag holder and a beverage cooler located at the bottom of the dashboard." -- Left Lane News (2014)
  • "With the third-row seats up, there's a deep well behind the seats, enough to hold a week's worth of groceries. We folded those seats flat, a simple task accomplished by pulling a pair of straps. Then there was room for all of our gear ... and more." -- Boston Globe (2014)
