2013 Honda Insight Overview

Powered by a four-cylinder engine and electric motor, test drivers said the 2013 Honda Insight can be slow to accelerate, and that passing on the highway requires some forethought. An automatic transmission (CVT) is standard. The Insight has a stop/start feature that shuts down the engine when the car is stopped to conserve fuel, but some reviewers said that the Insight shudders when it restarts. The 2013 Insight gets an EPA-estimated 41/44 mpg city/highway, which is great compared to the fuel economy of gas-only compact cars, but not as good as that of rival hybrids like the 2013 Toyota Prius c. Reviewers praised the Honda Insight’s communicative steering and body control around turns. However, they also pointed out that the ride can be harsh.

While some critics said the 2013 Honda Insight features cheap interior materials, others appreciated its contemporary design. Test drivers said the Insight’s front seats were sufficiently comfortable, but that head- and legroom are limited in the back seat. With the rear seats folded, the Insight has 31.5 cubic feet of cargo space. The 2013 Insight comes with automatic climate control and a two-speaker CD audio system with an auxiliary input jack. Available features include Bluetooth, a USB port, cruise control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, an upgraded audio system, voice-controlled navigation and a rearview camera. Most reviewers wrote that most controls are logically placed, though some said that the available navigation system is difficult to use.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2013 Toyota Prius c hybrid gets substantially better fuel economy ratings than the Honda Insight, and it has a bit more cargo space with the rear seats in use. The Prius c also comes standard with a USB port and Bluetooth, and automotive critics said its tech features are easy to use.

Reviews said the 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid has sportier driving dynamics than most hybrids, citing communicative steering and agility around corners. The Jetta Hybrid also earned praise for its spacious cabin, which offers plenty of legroom in the back seat.
