2019 Honda HR-V Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.5

The 2019 Honda HR-V has a generally nice interior, with solid materials and a pleasing design. Back-seat room and cargo space are excellent, though the front seat accommodations still aren't that great. The optional touch-screen infotainment system can be difficult to use.

  • Although the interior looks nice, some of the trim pieces and the functionality of a few controls aren't up to Honda's usual high standards." -- Edmunds
  • "The interior doesn't change all that much, and it's still a pleasant place to hang out. The Sport trim adds a black headliner and contrasting stitching on the cushy cloth seats, and I like the way both additions mix with the HR-V's interior design." -- CNET
  • "Interior quality is excellent, and the design is far more attractive than what we've come to expect from uber-practical Honda." -- Autotrader (2018)

Seating

The Honda HR-V seats five people on standard cloth upholstery. Leather upholstery, heated front seats, an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob are optional. The HR-V has two complete sets of LATCH connectors and a tether anchor for the middle seat. The tether anchors could be confused for other hardware, and the lower anchors are set deep in the seat.

The front seat cushions are firm, and there aren’t a lot of adjustments to help you get comfortable. Taller occupants might also feel a little cramped. The HR-V offers plenty of second-row legroom and passenger space, however.

  • "In this class, the HR-V offers more rear-seat legroom than the Jeep Renegade or Mazda CX-3." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • The rear seats are expectedly small for a vehicle in this class, but my six-foot-tall frame had little issue getting in and staying comfortable." -- CNET
  • The front seats are narrow and firmly cushioned. Lumbar support is not adjustable. Taller folks might take issue with the lack of adjustability and poor legroom. The door and center armrests have good padding, though, and the rear seats are firm but comfy. … The HR-V's interior is more useful than that of any other vehicle in the class, with a nifty rear seat that can fold or swing up and out of the way. Rear-seat occupants will be pleased with the amount of room." -- Edmunds

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2019 Honda HR-V include Bluetooth, a USB port, a four-speaker stereo, a 5-inch display screen, and a rearview camera. Optional features include automatic climate control, a moonroof, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, remote start, a six-speaker stereo, an additional USB port, satellite radio, HD Radio, navigation, a 7-inch touch-screen infotainment system, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. Optional driver assistance features include front and rear parking sensors, the Honda LaneWatch blind spot camera, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, road departure mitigation, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and automatic emergency braking.

The HR-V’s base models have plenty of physical buttons and knobs that make adjusting functions simple. The upgraded touch-screen interface can be tricky to use while driving. A new dedicated volume knob for this model year improves operation slightly.

  • "All of the HR-V's central controls are easily within the driver's reach, and the steering wheel controls feel substantial and high-quality. But the lack of physical infotainment and climate control buttons and knobs is a huge minus. … The touchscreen user interface looks nice even with its low-rent nav graphics. It's frustrating to use, though, because of the imprecise virtual buttons and a confounding menu structure. Newly available Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration helps make the screen more usable." -- Edmunds
  • The base LX keeps its easy-to-use climate-control system, while all others still employ a touch-based setup that can sometimes be annoying to operate while the vehicle is in motion." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "While Honda still fits a dinky little screen in the base HR-V, higher trim levels receive a revised 7-inch Display Audio infotainment system with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It feels more responsive than it has in the past, but it's still the old version of Honda's system, not running the flashy new software I've experienced in other updated models, like the Accord, Insight and Odyssey." -- CNET

Cargo

The Honda HR-V has 24.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind its second row and 58.8 cubic feet with the back seat folded down. Those values are among the highest in the class. All-wheel-drive models have slightly less space. A 60/40 split-folding rear seat and Honda's Magic Seat are standard. With Magic Seat, the bottom cushion of the back seats can fold up to give you room to store cargo upright.

  • "The real magic in the second row comes from Honda's split-folding rear seats. While my tester's optional all-wheel drive does eat into cargo capacity by a small bit, it still has 57.6 cubic feet of space with the second row folded flat, putting it at the top of its segment." -- CNET
  • "With its Magic Seat flip-up rear seat, the HR-V can hold taller items, like a potted plant or lamp, that need to stand upright. In fact, with nearly 60 cubic feet of cargo volume, the HR-V is one of the most accommodating subcompacts you can buy." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "It has unbeatable versatility thanks to the flat-folding rear seat and flip-up cushions." -- Edmunds
