2014 Honda CR-Z Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2014 Honda CR-Z was new.

Interior: 7.4

Reviewers agree that the 2014 Honda CR-Z’s cabin has a unique style that’s reminiscent of a spacecraft, with a sleek instrument panel as the most prominent feature. Ambient lights change color depending on which mode you’re driving in, and test drivers say this adds to the bold, futuristic vibe. Auto writers say the seats are generally comfy and there’s adequate space, though they report that rearward visibility is poor and a low roofline can make tall drivers feel cramped. The climate controls and gauges are easy to read, reviewers note, though one reviewer says that the audio controls are complicated by the optional navigation system, which uses the same display screen.

  • "Where all hybrid cars have additional gauges and playful readouts to make them appear more futuristic, the 2014 Honda CR-Z hybrid's cockpit looks like something from a pseudo-sci-fi film." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The cabin design almost looks as if it's pulled from a spaceship, with an ultramodern instrument panel highlighted by a prominent digital speedometer encircled by an analog tachometer." -- Left Lane News
  • "The interior's most notable feature is its space-age dash design, which is built around a large digital speedometer surrounded by an equally prominent analog tachometer. Adding a wow factor are background lights that change color to indicate driving style efficiency." -- Edmunds (2013)
  • "The interior is an interesting blend of shapes and textures. The overall ambiance is sporty and modern, with the chrome-finish door handles lending a bit of class." -- Consumer Guide (2012)

The two-seat CR-Z comes with mesh sport seats and a steering wheel that tilts and telescopes. A leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob are available. The driver seat is comfy and supportive and there’s sufficient head- and legroom, test drivers say. Still, they add that taller drivers may feel cramped under the low roof. Reviewers point out that leather seats aren’t an option, the seats don’t offer lumbar support and rear visibility is poor due to the sloping roofline. However, they say that the standard rearview camera makes backing up easier.

  • "The sport seats are nicely bolstered and very comfortable, but Honda does not offer a leather seat option, and black is the only interior color scheme available on most models." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Rear visibility is considerably impaired from the bipartite rear window and sloping roofline, but a standard rearview mirror [camera] helps to take the fear out of backup maneuvers." -- Left Lane News
  • "The idea is to apparently better associate the car with the original two-seat CRX, though some measure of practicality is sacrificed, of course. Seat comfort is adequate, but tall drivers may find a lack of adjustability." -- Edmunds (2013)
  • "Most adults will have sufficient headroom and legroom. Be careful when raising the seat bottoms, as your head can brush the headliner in fairly short order. Oddly, the seat backs for the driver and passenger each feel different. The driver seat is very comfortable and supportive. The passenger seat in cars tested suffered from a noticeable bulge in the lower-back area. No lumbar adjustment is offered." -- Consumer Guide (2012)

Interior Features

The 2014 Honda CR-Z comes standard with automatic climate control, a rearview mirror with an integrated backup camera display, steering wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls and a six-speaker CD audio system with a USB port, an auxiliary audio jack and Bluetooth phone connectivity. Options include a voice-controlled navigation system, a multi-angle rearview camera and an upgraded audio system with Pandora Internet radio compatibility.

Reviewers say the CR-Z’s climate controls are easy to reach and operate, the gauges are clearly labeled and the information on the instrument cluster can be customized to meet the driver’s needs. One reviewer says that the available navigation system makes it more difficult to adjust some audio settings.

  • "Worry not, though, for in typical Honda style all of the CR-Z's controls are logically placed and easy to operate. We particularly like the placement of the climate controls, which reside just to the right of the steering wheel." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • “A configurable display allows you to call up other useful information, including instant and average fuel economy readings." -- Edmunds (2013)
  • "We like CR-Z's ‘3D’ gauges, as well as the green-blue-red fuel-economy reminder 'halo' around the speedometer. The climate controls are convenient and simple. The navigation system is the same as that in the Fit and Honda Civic. It absorbs audio functions, which complicates some adjustments." -- Consumer Guide (2012)

The CR-Z has 25.1 cubic feet of cargo space, which is good for a small, two-seat hatchback. Reviewers say the cargo shelf behind the seats features handy storage compartments for small items, but they’re disappointed that a center console doesn’t come standard.

  • "The front-drive CR-Z is a 2-door hatchback with room for just two people but with a pretty big cargo hold." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "A flip-down partition ahead of the main cargo area folds to create additional space, and there is some storage behind the seats, which have handy closable lids. Cabin storage consists of a small glovebox, a couple of cubbies under the audio controls, and tiny door pockets. No center console is included, but one is available as a dealer-installed accessory. This is a feature we wish Honda would make standard at the factory." -- Consumer Guide (2012)
