2020 Honda CR-V Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 8.5

The 2020 Honda CR-V has a handsome cabin made with quality materials. There's adult-friendly seating in both rows, and cargo space is cavernous for the class. The base trim is a bit lacking in standard tech though.

  • "The CR-V provides a tasteful, if a tad dull, design aesthetic backed up with above-average materials and build construction for this segment. If you're a previous CR-V owner, you'll note that this most recent version features a higher-quality and more premium environment than past models. If you aren't, you'll still find it to have one of the nicest cabins in terms of quality, and also one of the most functional, as it boasts a number of clever storage solutions in the center console." -- Autoblog
  • "A stylish and spacious interior creates a cool and comfortable environment in the CR-V. Quality materials and a familiar layout combine for a contemporary look and feel. A tasteful balance of faux-wood accents, chromed plastic, and brushed-satin finishes looked particularly upscale in the Touring version we tested." -- Car and Driver
  • "Flowing interior panels and trim inserts show generally convincing quality, as does the leather adorning the seats and steering wheel (EX-L and Touring trim levels). A well-built vehicle in every respect." -- Edmunds (2018)

Seating

The CR-V has one of the roomiest cabins in the class, with copious amounts of head- and legroom. This Honda seats five people on standard cloth upholstery. Upgrades include heated front seats, power-adjustable front seats, leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a heated steering wheel.

For installing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats. The rear middle seat has a tether and one lower anchor, with the ability to borrow an additional anchor from either side.

  • "Supportive and nicely sculpted front seats hug their occupants in all the right places" -- Car and Driver
  • "Although its overall exterior length and width are average for the segment, its passenger and cargo space are better than nearly every competitor. The 60/40-split reclining back seat provides genuine space and comfort for even large adults, while a rear-facing car seat should be able to fit in the middle position – even with taller passengers up front. … Headroom is abundant regardless of the seating position or the presence of the available sunroof." -- Autoblog
  • "As noted, the 2019 CR-V's 2-row/5-passenger interior space is one of its best attributes -- an impressive feat given that the previous generation was already among the most spacious in its class. In addition to its growth, the latest CR-V’s space is easy to utilize." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)

Interior Features

The CR-V comes standard with a 5-inch infotainment display, a USB port, Bluetooth, a four-speaker stereo, and automatic climate control. Most rivals offer more standard tech like a touch screen and smartphone integration, whereas the Honda only includes those items in upper trims.

Several more features are available. These include infotainment upgrades like a 7-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, wireless device charging, HD Radio, satellite radio, more USB ports, and a stereo with six, eight, or nine speakers. A dual-zone automatic climate control, push button start, and a moonroof are also optional.

Aside from buttons for climate settings and a volume knob, there are no physical controls for the CR-V’s tech features found in the EX trim and above. The touch screen occasionally lags when responding to inputs, and some of the on-screen buttons are too small.

Standard safety features include a rearview camera, traffic sign recognition, a road departure mitigation system, adaptive cruise control, a collision mitigation braking system, and lane keep assist. Upgrades include front and rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert.

  • "In the EX trim, the CR-V comes standard with an abundance of tech for a reasonable price that makes the base LX trim a bit of a moot point. … Controlling them is a seven-inch touchscreen, which isn't the CR-V's strongest element due to iffy responses, lack of physical menu buttons, and an occasionally confusing menu structure. Honda's newer interface found in the Odyssey and Accord corrects these issues. Rival systems, particularly the Subaru Forester's, offer comparable features with a more user-friendly interface." -- Autoblog
  • "An otherwise excellent presentation is offset by Honda’s frustrating infotainment system. … Honda reintroduced a rotary volume knob last year and we appreciate that, but a lack of other controls, slow infotainment responses, and the absence of an auxiliary input can’t be forgiven." -- Car and Driver
  • "The physical controls are very intuitive, but the touch-sensitive buttons can be annoying. Some on-screen buttons are small, and it's too easy to graze the touch-sensitive volume control on the steering wheel." -- Edmunds (2018)

Cargo

The CR-V has more room than most compact SUVs. Depending on the trim, there is between 37.6 and 39.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats. Fold those seats down, and you get 75.8 cubic feet of space behind the front seats.

  • "Leading its class in cargo volume and luggage space, the CR-V not only earns high marks in those subjects, but also by way of its inclusion of user-friendly and useful equipment. We managed to fit 10 carry-on suitcases behind the rear seat, which matched the Mazda CX-5 and the Ford Escape. Fold the back seat flat, and the Honda offers best-in-class luggage space." -- Car and Driver
  • "Behind that back seat is a large and versatile cargo area (37.6 to 39.2 cubic feet) with one of the lowest, most easily loaded cargo floors in the segment. That's good news if you'll be lifting a big, heavy stroller, or the dog needs to jump aboard. Folding the back seat down using the two remote pulls in the cargo area reveals 75.8 cubic feet of maximum capacity. That's better than most midsize SUVs like the Ford Edge and better than nearly all its fellow compact SUVs." -- Autoblog
  • "The CR-V is a master of practicality. From its enormous and multiconfigurable storage capacity to its many clever compartments, this Honda makes you question if a larger SUV is necessary. " -- Edmunds (2018)
