2020 Honda Civic Interior Review

Interior: 7.8

The 2020 Honda Civic exudes quality, with well-built surfaces, premium materials, and soft-touch plastics. Passenger and cargo space are decent, and while the infotainment system is generally straightforward, the available touch screen can be tricky to work with.

  • "Construction is tight and solid inside and out. Even though there's quite a bit of plastic around the cabin, everything feels well-built. On higher trims, a number of surfaces, especially major touch points, are covered in higher quality materials, which elevate the interior feel." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "The 2019 Civic’s interior is full of premium materials and top-notch plastics." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "The car presents very well, too. I wasn't sure how much I'd like the new interior design treatment – it looks like it can't make up its mind between 'conservative' and 'tech forward,' at least in pictures. But the reality was smooth feeling controls, solid shutting doors, comfortable seats, and a general sense that this Civic will stand up well to years and years of use. For that sense of build quality I'll happily give up the most fetching interior design." -- Autoblog (2016)

Most Civics seat up to five people, while the R-Type accommodates four. Cloth upholstery comes standard, and leather-trimmed seats, heated front seats, power-adjustable front seats, heated rear outboard seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel are available.

There’s enough room for most people in both the front and back seats of this vehicle. However, headroom can get a touch restrictive in the rear. Some critics say the car’s low height can make it difficult to get into or out of, but others contend that the wide door openings make doing so easy.

For securing child safety seats, there are complete sets of LATCH connectors for the second-row outboard seats, as well as a tether anchor for the rear middle seat.

  • "It's easy to dial in a comfortable and confident driving position for short and tall drivers alike. Front and rear headroom is generous, and rear legroom is ample. There's enough room for a tall passenger to sit behind a tall driver. The large door openings, combined with doors that are short in length, make for easy entry and exit even in tight spaces. Outward visibility is also impressive." -- Edmunds
  • "Ergonomics is amenable to drivers of all sizes. … The Civic boasts some of the best interior volume among compact cars. Rear-seat legroom is impressive in the sedan, but beware of the wide sills when entering and exiting." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "The car's low stance means doing the limbo to get in and out. In addition, the front seats lack adjustable lumbar support, which could cause discomfort." -- Consumer Reports (2018)

Interior Features

Standard equipment in this vehicle includes a 5-inch display screen, a USB port, Bluetooth, a four-speaker stereo, and automatic climate control. The list of standard safety features is a bit longer, with lane departure warning, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, a pre-collision warning and braking system, and a rearview camera.

Available equipment includes a 7-inch touch screen, smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a navigation system, wireless device charging, two more USB ports, HD Radio, satellite radio, and an upgraded stereo with eight, 10, or 12 speakers. Other convenience upgrades include push-button start, remote start, proximity keyless entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a moonroof. Blind spot monitoring is also available.

The physical controls, such as large climate and volume knobs, make the infotainment system easier to use. Some critics are unimpressed with the touch-screen setup.

  • "All of the controls are well-placed and intuitive, although some basic functions (fan speed, for example) require touchscreen menu diving – the only real blemish on this otherwise excellent cabin." -- Edmunds
  • "The large, easy-to-read infotainment touch screen also serves as the control center for audio, Apple CarPlay and the optional navigation system." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "We found Honda's infotainment system to be unintuitive--the only way to avoid it is to get the base LX." -- Consumer Reports (2018)

Cargo space in the Civic varies with both trim and body type. Coupes have 11.9- or 12.1-cubic-foot trunks. Sedans have 15.1- or 14.7-cubic-foot trunks, which is above average. Finally, the hatchback provides a maximum 46.2 cubic feet of space, while space behind the hatchback's rear seats varies, depending on trim: 22.6 or 25.7 cubic feet.

  • "With 25.7 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats, the Civic hatchback is generous with luggage space, although its maximum cargo capacity (46.2 cubic feet with the rear seats folded) is only average. The low liftover height makes for easy loading, but the angled rear window may get in the way of bulkier boxes." -- Edmunds
  • "At 15.1 cubic feet, the Civic sedan's trunk is huge. Hatchback Civics boast 25.7 cubic feet of space with the rear seats up and some 20 additional cubic feet with them down." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "The interior has a lot of storage space." -- Consumer Reports (2019)
