2015 Honda Accord Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2015 Honda Accord was new.

Performance: 7.3

With strong engine choices, a comfortable ride and sharp handling, most automotive journalists think the 2015 Honda Accord delivers a very satisfying driving experience. However, a few note that the steering is numb and braking power is lackluster.

  • "The Accord serves up one of the sportier driving experiences in its segment thanks to a well-tuned MacPherson strut suspension and a precise electric power steering system." -- Left Lane News
  • "The lackluster steering will lose some Accord faithful, but the majority of shoppers will care more about the improved refinement and better gas mileage." -- Cars.com (2013)
  • "In daily use, the 3,531-pound Accord rides with superb comfort and has more than enough handling ability to see you through gnarly freeway interchanges and grocery store parking lots." -- Inside Line (2013)

Acceleration and Power

The 2015 Accord comes standard with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 185 horsepower (189 horsepower in the Accord Sport). EX-L V6 and Touring models come with a 278-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 engine. A six-speed manual transmission is standard in the LX, Sport and EX sedans, as well as the LX-S, EX and EX-L V6 coupes. Four-cylinder models are available with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), while V6 models are available with a six-speed automatic. According to the EPA, the 2015 Accord LX sedan with the four-cylinder engine and CVT gets 27/35 mpg city/highway, which is good for the class.

Test drivers report that the four-cylinder Accord has unexpectedly strong acceleration and good highway passing power, while the V6 model feels exceptionally quick. They add that the CVT that’s available with four-cylinder models is very responsive.

  • "Most Honda Accord buyers end up choosing the four-cylinder engine, and they won't be disappointed, as it revs willingly and delivers its power in a smooth and satisfying manner. Although CVTs typically don't have the best reputation for refinement, Honda's unit is the best of the breed, as it responds quickly for swift passing maneuvers and then lets the engine rpm drop back smoothly when the need for quick acceleration has passed." -- Edmunds
  • "The Accord's CVT feels much like a normal automatic, mimicking gear changes. Even a base sedan has good power for acceleration and passing, yet attains up to 36 mpg on the highway. ... Honda Accord sedans and coupes with the 278-horsepower V6 are downright quick." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The standard 4-cylinder engines generally serve up more than sufficient power for most drivers, and manufacturers seem focus on fuel economy than performance these days, anyway." -- Consumer Guide (2014)
  • "The four-cylinder is the sweetheart of the gas-only group." -- Motor Trend (2013)

Handling and Braking

Most reviewers praise the 2015 Honda Accord’s comfortable ride and impressive cornering abilities. However, some critics note that the steering system does not provide as much feedback as they would like.

  • "The 2015 Honda Accord also manages to strike a near-perfect balance between a supple ride and engaging handling." -- Edmunds
  • "Unfortunately, the brakes remain mediocre, and independent testing has shown little progress relative to the previous model's units." -- Autotrader
  • "Ride quality is pleasing, with a smart balance between comfort and sportiness." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Ride was stable and composed, with the feel of a bigger car. But the Accord didn't handle like one. It's not performance-car sharp (steering may be a little lacking in feel), but the Accord is easily maneuverable with limited cornering lean." -- Consumer Guide (2014)
