Yaris vs. Fit: We’ll Help You Find the Superior Subcompact Car

Small cars have gotten really good, with significant improvements in safety, efficiency, and feature availability at a low price. In other words, it’s hard to really go wrong. The downside, though, is that there are a ton of choices, which makes the shopping process time consuming and potentially confusing. Just look at our rankings to see what we mean. We rank and review 14 subcompact cars and 23 hatchbacks. That’s a lot of competition.

To help simplify your shopping process, we’ll do a deep dive into just two of the models that compete in these classes: the Honda Fit and the Toyota Yaris.

The Fit, which is available only as a hatchback, is widely regarded as one of the best small cars on the market and is the winner of our 2019 Best Subcompact Car for the Money award. It was also named one of our 2018 Best New Cars for Teens. The Fit was last redesigned in 2015 and received some new features for 2018.

The Yaris is available as a sedan and a hatchback, though those two body styles are actually two different vehicles. The Yaris sedan is the better of the two by far. It’s manufactured by Mazda and debuted in 2016. It has received several feature updates over the past couple of years. The Yaris hatch debuted in 2012 and received mild refreshes in 2015 and 2018.

The Yaris fares well in our subcompact car rankings and is a finalist for our 2019 Best Subcompact Car for the Money award, though that distinction comes with a caveat: The scoring is mostly based on the Yaris sedan. The inferior hatchback model is on hiatus for 2019, with a redesign to come for 2020. The 2018 model will be available in the meantime and will factor into our evaluation of the Yaris lineup.

If this overview has piqued your curiosity about these two subcompact cars, you’ll find a lot of useful information on the following slides to help you figure out which of these two cars is the better choice for you.
