2020 Honda Civic
2 of 15

Winner: 2020 Honda Civic

Both the 2020 Honda Civic and the 2020 Mazda3 have base prices that are higher than nearly two-thirds of other compact cars. The few rivals that retail for more include other sporty and performance-oriented models such as the 2020 Volkswagen Golf, the 2020 Golf GTI, and the 2020 Subaru WRX

In the match between the Honda and Mazda, though, it’s the Civic that has a slight edge. The 2020 Civic sedan starts at $20,650, compared to the Mazda3 sedan’s base price tag of $21,500. The Civic Coupe starts at $21,050 and the hatchback model retails for $21,750. Higher trim levels of the sedan can cost up to $25,000, with the top Touring model coming in at $27,700. The sporty Civic Si coupe and sedan each carry a price of $25,200. The Civic’s lineup is crowned by the performance-oriented Type R hatchback and its price tag of $36,300.

The Mazda3 sedan ranges in price up to about $28,000, which is for a model with the Premium Package and all-wheel drive. The Mazda3 hatchback (MSRP: $23,700) is a few thousand dollars more expensive than the base Civic hatchback. An all-wheel-drive Mazda3 hatch at its highest trim level is around $29,000.

Further bolstering the Civic’s case is that it was named a finalist for our 2020 Best Compact Car for the Money award. That honorific reflects the best combination of quality and value in each segment. Quality comes from each vehicle’s overall U.S. News score, while value takes into account average new-car transaction prices and five-year ownership costs.
