When the Wrangler debuted in 1987, it was as if the CJ had gotten a new wardrobe. The most distinctive change was a switch to rectangular headlamps, which by then had become the default shape in auto design and did not wind up being popular among Jeep fans, many of whom were bemoaning the death of the CJ already. But everything else about the Wrangler’s aesthetic made it clear that this was the new CJ, which was the new Willys.
