Pricing

Winner: 2017 Ford Explorer (Details Below)

The base price for the 2017 Ford Explorer is $31,660, about $7,500 less than the base 2017 Buick Enclave’s price of $39,065. In fact, the Enclave is one of the most expensive nonluxury midsize SUVs on the market. All-wheel drive can be added to the lower Explorer trims for $2,150 (it comes standard in the Sport and Platinum trims). To get all-wheel drive in the Enclave, you’ll have to upgrade to the Leather ($43,765) or Premium ($47,625) model, then spend an additional $2,000. In other words, the least expensive all-wheel-drive Enclave costs nearly $12,000 more than the least expensive all-wheel-drive Explorer. Both base models provide a standard rearview camera but are otherwise sparsely equipped.

At the high end, a Ford Explorer Platinum goes for $53,235, about $5,000 less than the Enclave Premium. Choosing the Buick Enclave Premium is the only way to get many of the vehicle’s advanced safety features, which are available as options packages in midlevel Explorer models. The 2017 Ford Explorer is a better bet for families looking for a bargain.
