Winner: Focus

The base Focus S comes in at $17,225, beating out the base Corolla by a mere $75. Both are equipped with manual transmissions, along with similar standard convenience features and infotainment systems. The Focus comes with a rearview camera.

Corolla ECO models, starting at $19,135, have a more-powerful 140-horsepower engine, which is still 20-horsepower less than the base Focus. However, it comes standard with an automatic transmission, and a few hundred dollars will get you the sporty S model. The 2016 Corolla tops out at about $23,125 for the S Premium.

Although the base 2016 Focus beats the Corolla in terms of price, it has a much larger price spread. For each trim, the hatchback option runs about $500 more, and an automatic transmission is around $1,000. The SE sits at $18,515 and has the option of a fuel saving, 1.0-liter three-cylinder turbocharged engine.

Focus pricing rises quickly with the loaded Titanium trim, priced above the Corolla LE premium at $23,225. Also in the Ford lineup is the Focus ST hatchback at $24,225, the all-wheel drive super performance Focus RS at a substantial $35,900, and the Focus Electric, starting at $29,170.
