2012 GMC Yukon Overview

The 2012 GMC Yukon's base V8 engine delivers quick acceleration, especially on the highway, said reviewers. The Yukon Denali has a larger V8, though test drivers said it doesn't feel much quicker than the base model. The heavy-duty Yukon XL 2500 also has a different, larger V8 engine than the base Yukon. All Yukons have a six-speed automatic transmission that reviewers said shifts smoothly. A Yukon with the base engine and either rear- or four-wheel drive gets an estimated 15/21 mpg city/highway, which is fairly good for the class. Reviewers said the Yukon has a comfortable ride over road imperfections. For its size, the GMC Yukon is fairly maneuverable in city driving, they added. The standard 2012 Yukon can tow up to 8,500 pounds, and the Yukon XL 2500 can tow as much as 9,600 pounds, which is great for the class.

Test drivers said the GMC Yukon's cabin has many panels that are constructed from harder plastics, even in the top Denali trim, though most found the materials attractive. With the available front-row bench seat, the Yukon can seat up to nine. According to reviewers, the GMC Yukon's front seats are comfortable and spacious. However, critics said the third row is uncomfortable and has limited legroom, though some mentioned that the longer Yukon XL model has more third-row legroom. The Yukon comes standard with tri-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth, a USB port and satellite radio. Available features include navigation, heated second-row seats, leather seats, power flip and fold second-row seats, a rear-seat entertainment system, blind zone alert, a rearview camera and a Bose audio system. Test drivers noted that most of the Yukon’s controls and available navigation system are easy to use. The 2012 Yukon has up to 108.9 cubic feet of cargo space, which is less than what some rivals offer. The Yukon XL offers 137.4 cubic feet of room behind the first row, which is excellent for the class. Test drivers complained that the Yukon's third-row seats must be removed to maximize cargo space, and added that they are heavy and bulky.

The 2012 Chevrolet Suburban is closely related to the Yukon XL, and it has one of the most generously sized cargo areas in the class. As in the Yukon, the Suburban's V8 engine is praised for having ample power, and reviewers liked the Suburban's composed ride.

The 2012 Ford Expedition is one of few SUVs in the class that reviewers said offers a third row with enough room for adults. Test drivers also liked that the Expedition's third-row seats simply fold into the floor, and the Expedition earned praise for its poised handling.
