2020 GMC Sierra 1500 Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.9

The 2020 GMC Sierra has an attractive cabin with plenty of quality materials, but it falls short of Ford and Ram, which have the most luxurious interiors in the full-size pickup truck class. The Sierra doesn't feel as modern from a style standpoint, either. The seats are spacious and comfortable, however, and a user-friendly infotainment system comes standard. Plenty of driver assistance and bed features are available.

  • "The only bummer about the Sierra is its interior. It's perfectly serviceable, but that's about it. The Ram 1500 is much more luxurious, with a bigger helping of available infotainment technology. Heck, even the Ford F-150, the bastion of basic, has a nicer interior. Even the Sierra Denali -- which is not an inexpensive truck -- feels ho-hum and outdated inside." -- CNET
  • "We've given Chevy a hard time about the Silverado's less than thrilling interior. GMC steps it up, but not enough. While the materials are soft-touch, and there are a few pops of color and texture, the Sierra just doesn't push the interior design, even in the high-level Denali. It's monolithic and monochromatic, like driving the artifact from 2001: A Space Odyssey – shiny, vertical and black." -- Edmunds
  • "At first glance, you'd be hard pressed to tell the Sierra and Silverado's interiors apart from both each other and the outgoing models. It's basically the same design, though the Sierra makes do with some slightly nicer materials. Even in the Denali, though, leather, trim and switchgear feel cheap, and look notably worse than the competition. The Sierra's overall packaging is nowhere near as efficient as the new Ram 1500. It may be rugged, but it lacks a premium feel we've come to expect in these high-end trucks." -- Autoblog (2019)

Seating

The Sierra seats three in Regular Cab models and five or six in Double and Crew Cab models (depending on whether you opt for front-row bucket seats). Cloth upholstery is standard, and a rear-seat reminder comes in models with rear seats. Leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel are available.

The front seats are comfortable and spacious, and the cabin stays quiet even at highway speeds, making it easy to have a conversation. Drivers also enjoy good visibility. Double Cab models offer sufficient rear-seat space for adults, though they're not nearly as welcoming as the Crew Cab's rear seats, which are downright expansive.

For installing child safety seats, Sierra models with a back row have two full sets of LATCH connectors for the outboard seats, as well as an upper tether for the middle seat. The tether anchors can be hard to find, and the lower anchors are too deep in the seat.

  • "Another pleasant feature is that the GMC Sierra is spacious, and even the middle rear-seat passenger benefits from a flat floor." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "And you won't be missing much from the rear seats, either. That extra legroom back there means the Crew Cab version of the truck can properly handle a crew of any size." -- CNET (2019)
  • "While we don't know about other cabs, the crew cab grew three inches in length with the redesign, virtually all going to rear-seat legroom — which is vast." -- Consumer Guide (2019)

Interior Features

Standard features in the Sierra include Teen Driver (which lets you set audio and speed limits for secondary drivers), a rearview camera, and an infotainment system with a 7-inch touch screen, a six-speaker audio system (two speakers in Regular Cab models), Bluetooth, a USB port, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

Available features include a sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry, remote start, a 120-volt power outlet, wireless device charging, an 8-inch touch screen, a seven-speaker Bose audio system, satellite radio, HD Radio, a Wi-Fi hot spot, additional USB ports, voice recognition, and navigation.

Available active safety features include automatic high-beam headlights, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, lane change alert, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, forward collision warning, low-speed forward automatic braking, pedestrian detection, a surround-view parking camera system, a Rear Camera Mirror, a head-up display, and a safety alert seat that vibrates in conjunction with the other safety features to alert you to hazards they detect.

GMC's infotainment system works well. The center-stack controls – whether you're using the touch screen or the physical buttons and knobs – are easy to reach, and the menu layout is intuitive. The touch screen responds quickly to inputs, and connectivity features make it easy to sync your smartphone with the vehicle.

  • "At least the Sierra does well on the technology front. The huge heads-up display is clear and crisp and one of the best I've seen in any vehicle at any price point. The infotainment system is quick and intuitive. … The updated rear-camera mirror allows you to adjust the viewing angle and brightness. It's a great tool if your eyes get used to the new reference points." -- Autoblog (2019)
  • "Sierra's infotainment center has been upgraded to the latest generation, while retaining its 8-inch size, and we couldn't be happier with it. Apple CarPlay works seamlessly, which has been a constant gripe among our GM-driving staffers." -- Truck Trend (2019)
  • "In the dashboard sits a touchscreen running GMC's latest flavor of IntelliLink, which … continues to be among the best, offering a simple but comprehensive experience and, most important, responsive performance." -- CNET (2019)

Cargo

The Sierra is available with three bed lengths: 8-foot, 6-foot-6-inch, and 5-foot-8-inch. Note that not every bed length is available with every cab.

There's a good amount of small-item storage space throughout the cabin, and in models with rear seats, you can flip up the bottom cushion to make room for larger items. Several bed features are available, including an in-bed 120-volt power outlet, a multifunction tailgate (GMC calls it the MultiPro tailgate), an audio system integrated into the tailgate, and integrated LED lights.

  • "Of course, let's not forget the awesome, six-way MultiPro tailgate. It works like a traditional tailgate, a step, a workspace, a load stop and it even has a drop-down section so I can load up the bed easier. Heck, it's even got a Kicker audio system. No other tailgate in the pickup truck class is this functional." -- CNET
  • "The GMC Sierra scores well on the pickup-box front, with generous internal dimensions and 12 standard tie-downs. This year the corner steps built into the ends of its rear bumper have been enlarged to accommodate boots. … And then there's the new MultiPro six-position tailgate. Standard on the SLT, AT4 and Denali, the MultiPro tailgate has a second hinge in the middle — a tailgate within a tailgate, if you will — and a flip-up panel. The flip-up panel is a load stop that keeps stuff from sliding out in two of the positions, and it becomes a nearly full-width stairstep when deployed with both tailgates down. We could not stop playing with it. This genius bit of truck origami alone will sell some Sierras." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "In the here and now, Sierra's 5-foot, 8-inch box features best-in-class cargo volume at 63 cubic feet, which was created by widening the bed floor nearly seven inches. The standard bed floor … has 12 fixed tie downs rated at 500 pounds per corner. LED cargo lights are still present and, like everything else, have been improved." -- Truck Trend (2019)
