2018 GMC Sierra 1500 Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 was new.

Interior: 8.6

The 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 features a quiet, well-built interior that many think is among the best in the class. It’s attractive, and the materials quality (especially in higher trims) is worthy of some luxury vehicles. The front seats are spacious and comfortable, as are the Crew Cab’s rear seats (the Double Cab’s rear seats are a bit more cramped). There are plenty of standard and available tech features, including an intuitive infotainment system.

  • "The instrument panel, central touchscreen, and the array of buttons and knobs are attractive, well-labeled and easy to use." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "The GMC Sierra stacks up well against class rivals, and – like its Chevrolet Silverado sibling – offers strong, refined engines, good on-road behavior, plenty of handy in-cabin storage, and an impressively quiet driving environment; top-line models such as the Denali add a healthy dose of luxury to the mix." -- Consumer Guide (2015)
  • "It is true that the basic Sierra work truck isn't all that plush, but move up the line to the Denali model and you'll find more leather and chrome than in a Texas rodeo gift shop." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)

The Sierra is available with three cab styles. Regular Cab models seat three, and Double and Crew Cab models seat five or six, depending on whether you stick with the standard 40/20/40-split front-bench seat or opt for the available front bucket seats. Cloth or vinyl upholstery comes standard. Available seating features include leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, heated and ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel.

The Sierra’s front seats have plenty of room for passengers of all shapes and sizes. They’re also highly adjustable. The rear seats in the Double Cab are a little tight for adults, though they’re fine for children. The Crew Cab has large rear seats that anyone can be comfortable in.

The Sierra features two full sets of LATCH connectors for child seats in the rear outboard seats. You can expect to have some trouble installing car seats with this system. For starters, the upper tether anchors can be confused with other hardware. The lower anchors are no picnic, either: They're deep in the seat and hard to access, and a lot of force is required to connect a child seat to them. For ease of use, the Sierra's LATCH system earns the lowest rating of Poor from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

  • "As should be expected in a big truck, the front seats are massive. Flip-up rear seats offer more cargo versatility." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The Silverado/Sierra's crew cab offers plenty of room and easy access to both rows." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "The seats were comfortable, with a multitude of controls that allow a wide variety of human frames to find their optimal driving position. Acoustically, and this was something we repeated to ourselves several times during our many stints behind the wheel, the Sierra seemed as quiet as a late-model luxury sedan." -- Autoblog (2014)

Interior Features

Standard features in the Sierra include a USB port, a six-speaker audio system, a rearview camera, GMC's Teen Driver system, and the IntelliLink infotainment system with a 7-inch touch screen, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

Available features include dual-zone automatic climate control, a sunroof, a seven-speaker Bose audio system, a rear-seat entertainment system, wireless device charging, and an upgraded IntelliLink infotainment system with an 8-inch touch screen, satellite radio, HD Radio, and navigation. OnStar 4G LTE with a built-in Wi-Fi hot spot is also available.

Available driver assistance features include forward collision alert, forward automatic braking, lane keep assist, a safety alert seat, and front and rear parking sensors.

GM’s IntelliLink infotainment system controls many of the Sierra’s audio and climate functions. IntelliLink has an intuitive interface, and the Sierra has plenty of connectivity options for pairing your smartphone with the truck. For the 2018 model year, the 7-inch touch screen is standard (as is a rearview camera).

  • "With up to five USB ports, available 4G LTE Wi-Fi and standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, everything stored in your smartphone can now be part of your truck's infotainment system." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "We also loved the Sierra's gadgets. Compared to just a few short years ago, it's hard to believe a truck now has USB ports, navigation, in-vehicle apps, wireless cellphone charging and a center-mounted touchscreen. The only gadget we didn't enjoy was the voice-control system, which we had trouble using for both navigation and audio functions." -- Autotrader (2016)
  • "… we praised the bank of USB, cigarette lighter and household outlets at the bottom of the console and the array of gauges on the dashboard that allowed us to monitor just about everything mechanical." -- Autoblog (2014)

There are three different bed lengths you can get with your Sierra, but not every cab is offered with every bed. Regular and Double Cab Sierra models come standard with a 6-foot-6-inch bed, while Crew Cab models come standard with a 5-foot-8-inch bed. Regular Cab models are available with an 8-foot bed, and Crew Cab models are available with the 6-foot-6-inch bed.

The Sierra’s bed has some features that make it more usable. A step is built into the corner of the rear bumper, making it easy to climb into the bed. An EZ-Lift and Lower tailgate is available, which lets you operate the tailgate without applying much force. There’s plenty of small-item storage throughout the cabin, and the fold-up rear seats lend versatility to those equipped with back seats.

  • "A versatile bed, access via bumper steps, a backseat that is easy to manipulate, a flat floor and plenty of small item storage make this a strong utility vehicle." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "Steps mounted in the rear bumper along with reworked stake holes make it easy to climb into the bed, while an easy open/close option allows the tailgate to be accessed using just a pair of fingers." -- Left Lane News (2015)
  • "Flip-up rear seats offer more cargo versatility." -- Kelley Blue Book (2014)
