2014 GMC Sierra 1500 Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 was new.

Interior: 8.6

Test drivers report that the 2014 Sierra 1500's cabin is quiet and constructed with high-quality materials. One reviewer notes that while the Sierra's overall cab design is similar to the Chevrolet Silverado's cab, the GMC uses more upscale materials, such as real aluminum.

  • "In addition to being quiet, the new cabin is a pretty nice place to stay. The new dash looks properly modern but retains solid, simple ergonomics and big, easy-to-use buttons." -- Motor Trend
  • "Don't expect the interior of the Sierra to be a great departure from the Silverado either, even though the GMC is decidedly more upscale and premium in materials. Both share the same basic layout, steering wheel, console, dual passenger storage compartments and power ports. However, the GMC is able to brag that the aluminum surround on the center stack is real aluminum - yet the wood and chrome are still plastic. With the exception of some badging and unique upholsteries, they are almost twins." -- Autoblog
  • "Adding to the premium feel was the interior fit for a high-end sedan." -- Left Lane News

Regular cab Sierra models seat three, while double and crew cab models can seat up to six. If you plan to carry passengers in the back seat frequently, know that the crew cab offers more rear-seat space than the double cab model. While the 2013 extended cab model had two smaller rear-hinged doors that could not be opened when the front doors were closed, the 2014 double cab model that replaces it features four full doors. Cloth seats are standard, though vinyl is available on the base trim, and leather is available on upper trims. A front split-bench seat is standard, while bucket seats with a console are optional, as are power-adjustable, heated and cooled front seats. Reviewers generally find the 2014 GMC Sierra's seats comfortable in the front and back. Most critics say that it’s easy to find a comfortable driving position.

  • "Finally, the seats are wide and soft, perfect for a long drive out to the campground, and surround you with plenty of room to stretch out, especially in the rear." -- Motor Trend
  • "Look closely from the side and you notice that the Sierra's steering wheel is slightly off-plane with the dashboard. It's also off center with the middle of the driver's seat. This issue stems from the positioning of the steering column, and it was also the case on last-generation GM trucks. But we're surprised that engineers didn't manage to fix such a fundamental ergonomic flaw, even if it's tough to notice." -- Popular Mechanics
  • "The seats were comfortable, with a multitude of controls that allow a wide variety of human frames to find their optimal driving position. Acoustically, and this was something we repeated to ourselves several times during our many stints behind the wheel, the Sierra seemed as quiet as a late-model luxury sedan (credit plenty of sound deadening, noise-absorbing fender liners and triple-seals on the doors)." -- Autoblog

Interior Features

The 2014 Sierra 1500 comes standard with manual windows and mirrors and a basic AM/FM stereo with two USB ports. A sparse list of standard features is normal for a base truck trim, though. Power windows and mirrors, a backup camera, dual-zone automatic climate control, GMC's IntelliLink infotainment system, an upgraded Bose stereo system, navigation, five USB ports and satellite and HD Radio are optional. Available safety features include front and rear parking sensors, forward collision alert, lane departure warning and GM's Safety Alert Seat, which vibrates to notify the driver of potential hazards in the truck’s path.

Most reviewers focus their attention on the Sierra's IntelliLink system, and they generally like it. They say that it is fairly easy to control the audio system through the touch screen, and they appreciate that there are real buttons to access most settings. Test drivers also appreciate the abundance of USB ports that are available to keep electronic devices charged and connected.

  • "The GMC MyLink touch-screen infotainment system is user-friendly, changes pages fairly quickly, and features redundant controls for those who want buttons, though it's missing a hard button to take you directly to the nav screen. The color display in the gauge cluster is likewise easy to use with the steering wheel controls and easy to read." -- Motor Trend
  • "All of the buttons and controls are easy to find, including the large icons on the touchscreen to control the latest IntelliLink infotainment system." -- Popular Mechanics
  • "The Sierra's available technology gives new meaning to 'work truck.' Higher trims include the IntelliLink touch-screen system to operate navigation, audio and more. We were equally impressed by its five (5!) USB inputs and an AC outlet that can keep a bounty of devices juiced and ready to play." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "On the subject of cabin likes and dislikes, we praised the bank of USB, cigarette lighter and household outlets at the bottom of the console and the array of gauges on the dashboard that allowed us to monitor just about everything mechanical." -- Autoblog

The 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 is available with an 8-foot bed on regular cab models, a 6-foot 6-inch bed with all three cab configurations and a 5-foot 8-inch bed on crew cab models. In terms of cabin storage, reviewers say that the double and crew cab models, which both have rear seats, are the best choices if you need to carry bulky items in the cab.

  • "Flip-up rear seats offer more cargo versatility." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "We appreciated the storage space, and the generous headroom (the headliner appears cut out for a ten-gallon hat)." -- Autoblog
