2007 GMC Sierra 1500 Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2007 GMC Sierra 1500 was new.

Interior: 8.4

Regardless of whether a Regular, Extended or Crew Cab, the GMC Sierra 1500 receives accolades for having a spacious, comfortable and versatile interior cabin. "We found it hard to choose between the 'pure pickup' interior and the 'luxury-inspired' interior, because both were handsome and functional," says Kelley Blue Book.

The pure-pickup interior is completely different from the luxury-inspired interior, and was primarily designed with the blue-collar worker in mind. It features larger buttons/controls and door handles in order to operate the interior while wearing work gloves. The Washington Post reports: "Interior materials are high quality. And although the passenger cabin still bespeaks 'work truck, ' it is much more attractive and comfortable than the cabins of any of its predecessors." The luxury-inspired interior borrows its interior paneling from the 2007 GMC Yukon SLT, providing luxury materials such as wood grain and leather. Kelley Blue Book writes: "The interior exudes style and comfort. The instrument cluster provides a full range of information, including such data as tire pressure." Moreover, GM claims that exterior noise is 20 percent less noticeable in the interior due to new insulation, and Consumer Guide says that "visibility is generally good."

The standard cab is only available with a 40/20/40 split-back bench seat, in which the middle 20 percent can be folded into an armrest with two cup holders and a storage compartment. The Extended and Crew cabs come with the same front seat format if selected with a pure-pickup interior package; however, these cabs do offer individual front bucket-seats for the luxury-inspired interior. In addition, the dashboard in both interior configurations has been pushed forward creating ample legroom for adults. Some reviewers criticize both the bucket and bench seats for lacking side support in turns, but Kelley Blue Book, echoing the majority view, says the seats are still "firm and comfortable."

Reviewers agree that the Extended and Crew cabs offer plenty of backseat room; in fact, Newsday reports, "the rear seats were more comfortable than the front seats." The Extended Cab has a foldable standard one-piece bench seat with flip-down center armrest, while the Crew Cab has a 60/40 split-back foldable bench seat. Car and Driver writes: "Crew cab models feature a huge back seat, while the extended cab's rear bench is acceptable for most adults, so long as it's not a cross-country trip. It's hard to be uncomfortable with plenty of space for your 10-gallon hat."

Interior Features

The Sierra's interior utilizes premium interior materials, which include chrome details, wood grain trim, low-gloss plastic, leather-like vinyl, plush cloth and real leather, all of which contribute to the Sierra's high-quality looking interior. This choice in materials mated with user-friendly ergonomics and easy-to-read gauges, compelled Newsday to write: "Years ago, pickup trucks were merely rough, tough work machines. Today, they offer more seating and contain luxurious comforts, as seen in the 2007 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE."

Standard features on the most basic Sierra with the Pure-Pickup interior includes dual-zone air conditioning with individual manual-climate settings for driver and right front passenger; a Driver Information Center; tire pressure monitor; interior lighting (door-handle activated illuminated entry); two dash-mounted, 12-volt auxiliary power outlets; adjustable-tilt steering column, and an AM'/FM stereo. Choosing the luxury-inspired interior allows buyers to add features like cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate controls and a Bose speaker system.

The Sierra has an optional navigation system, connected to the OnStar service. It is a full touch-screen navigation system and incorporates a fully integrated AM/FM stereo and CD/MP3 player. A unique feature of the system is its Fuel Station Locator, which allows drivers to receive audio directions to the nearest fueling station.

For interior storage, the pure-pickup interior package has two large pockets on both door panels, and has two (upper and lower) deep glove boxes on the passenger side. The luxury-inspired interior has a deep center console tucked between the front bucket seats, which can be locked for security concerns. Also Consumer Guide notes, "On both extended and crew cabs, [the] rear seat cushion flips back against seatback, leaving a large cargo area with a nearly flat floor."
