2018 GMC Canyon Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 8.4

The 2018 GMC Canyon has a nicer interior than most rivals. The cabin looks good, and there are plenty of high-quality materials throughout. Both rows of seats have enough space for adult passengers in Crew Cab models (the back of Extended Cab models may be too cramped for most), though the front seats may be a little too stiff for some people. The Canyon offers a fair number of tech features, including a user-friendly infotainment system.

  • "The 2017 GMC Canyon's interior is a lot nicer than market expectations might have required, and it's a fine blend of modern style with truck practicality." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
  • "There's no mistaking the GMC Canyon as anything but a pickup from the outside, but in terms of comfort, it delivers the kind of pleasant accommodations that are normally reserved for SUVs. … Though there are some plastics that aren't exactly class-leading, the Canyon has a likable and well-organized cabin overall." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "It's also a big step above the Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tacoma in terms of gadgets, interior quality and – in our opinion, anyway – style, given its brand-new design compared to rivals' aging looks." -- Autotrader (2016)

Seating

The standard GMC Canyon doesn't include a rear seat and can therefore only seat two. All other Extended Cab models seat four, while Crew Cab models can seat five. Vinyl upholstery and a four-way power-adjustable driver's seat are standard. Available upgrades include a four-way power-adjustable passenger seat, cloth or leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a heated steering wheel.

The Canyon’s front seats are generally comfortable, though they may feel a little stiff by the end of a long drive. The rear seats in Extended Cab models are small and likely won't be suitable if you regularly carry rear-seat passengers. The Crew Cab's have ample room for adults and can even accommodate five people on shorter drives without everyone in the back hating life.

Two complete sets of LATCH car-seat connectors are in the Canyon's second row. The lower anchors are easy to access, but the top tether anchors are hard to find.

  • "The front seats are well-padded and supportive. They offer all-day livability, but larger-framed occupants could find them a bit confining. The crew cab's rear seats are well suited to adult passengers and offer adequate support." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "There's ample center console storage, and the Crew Cab should handle four adults with decent comfort and five in a pinch." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
  • "More importantly, we discovered the front seats could be a little more supportive after a long stint behind the wheel." -- Autotrader (2016)

Interior Features

Standard features in the Canyon include a six-speaker audio system, a USB port, a rearview camera, the Teen Driver management system, and the IntelliLink infotainment system with a 7-inch touch screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth.

Available features include an 8-inch touch-screen infotainment system, multiple USB ports, voice command activation, satellite radio, a 4G Wi-Fi hot spot, automatic climate control, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, navigation, a seven-speaker Bose premium sound system, and wireless charging.

The Canyon offers plenty of connectivity options, some of which you can’t get in rival compact pickups. The IntelliLink infotainment system makes it easy to control many of the Canyon’s features. The interface is intuitive, and the touch screen is responsive. There are also physical buttons for some features so you don’t always have to use the touch screen.

  • "Smartphone integration is well-executed and looks great on the large, high-resolution screen. Very rapid responses to touch inputs is a big advance over the outgoing system. The native navigation and audio controls are good most of the time." -- Edmunds
  • "Most of the functions are in a big center stack, with large knobs that should be easily operated by gloved hands." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
  • "The SLE and SLT also get an eight-inch center touchscreen with GMC's IntelliLink infotainment system. The screen has large icons that drivers tap to choose the navigation, audio, and communication functions. It also provides access to apps, such as Pandora internet radio, through owner's smartphones. IntelliLink is much more modern than the systems offered by Toyota and Nissan, and the large icons make it fairly easy to use." -- Left Lane News (2015)

Cargo

A 6-foot-2-inch bed is offered with both Crew Cab and Extended Cab Canyons. Crew Cab models are also available with a 5-foot-2-inch bed. An optional EZ Lift-and-Lower tailgate makes it easier to load heavy cargo. Interior storage space is also good.

  • "The Canyon manages a good balance of abundant small item storage and respectable rear-seat cargo space. Buyers looking to maximize hauling capability, though, should go for the long-bed configuration." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "An available EZ Lift-and-Lower function uses built-in struts to allow the tailgate to be opened and closed with just one hand. For more practicality, the bed can be split into upper and lower sections thanks to a standard two-tier loading system." -- Left Lane News (2016)
  • "At the business end, both GM trucks offer a decidedly user-friendly cargo box. Not only are there four 'solid' tie-down hooks, there are also 13 ports that can hold additional hooks, and there are optional racks for such things as bikes and kayaks that can be purchased through the dealer. Also nice is a damped, easy-open (and lift) tailgate, along with a step built into the rear bumper." -- Consumer Guide (2015)
