2012 GMC Acadia Review

Test drivers praise the 2012 GMC Acadia for its spacious interior, competent performance, roomy third row and aggressive looks. Still, shoppers looking for a three-row SUV at a bargain-basement price will want to look elsewhere.

Pros & Cons

  • Great cargo space for the class
  • Roomy third-row seat
  • Transmission can be slow to downshift
  • Limited rearward visibility

2012 GMC Acadia Overview

When it was new, reviewers said the V6-powered GMC Acadia has good acceleration around town and on the freeway. The 2012 Acadia’s six-speed automatic transmission was praised for its smooth shifts, but criticized because it can be hesitant to downshift when more power is needed. Fuel economy is an EPA-estimated 17/24 mpg city/highway, which is comparable to most rivals’. Test drivers said that the Acadia has a comfortable ride and neutral handling, though some critics mentioned that its large size can make the Acadia difficult to maneuver.

Test drivers said the 2012 GMC Acadia's cabin has an eye-catching design and is built with quality materials, though some said that the Acadia Denali didn’t seem nice enough inside to justify the additional cost when it was new. Critics noted that the front seats are spacious and comfortable, but some wrote that rearward visibility is compromised by a high beltline and thick roof pillars. Still, many liked the spacious second row, and some said that the third row has enough space for adults, which is rare for the class. The 2012 Acadia comes standard with a six-speaker stereo with satellite radio and an auxiliary input. Available features include Bluetooth, tri-zone automatic climate control, navigation, a rear-seat entertainment system, a rearview camera and a 10-speaker Bose stereo system. The Acadia offers up to 115.9 cubic feet of cargo space, which is excellent for the class.

Other SUVs to Consider

The 2012 Buick Enclave has a lot in common with the Acadia, including ample cargo space and three rows of seats that reviewers said are spacious for the class. When it was new, we named the Enclave our Best Three-Row Midsize SUV for Families, and test drivers praised its stylish cabin and premium materials.

The 2012 Dodge Durango is one of the few midsize SUVs that’s available with a V8 engine, and test drivers said the Durango offers nimble handling and a comfortable ride. The Durango also won points for its spacious front seats and its attractive, high-quality interior.
