2021 Genesis GV80 Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.8

The all-new 2021 Genesis GV80 has a cabin that's quiet, stylish, and elegant. There are first-rate materials everywhere, leaving no doubt that it's a luxury vehicle through and through. In fact, it's a clear step above several rivals in terms of interior quality. The first two rows of seats are supportive and comfortable, though the available third-row seats are undersized. There are plenty of standard features, including a huge infotainment display.

  • "The cabin is chic and premium. It's also not trying to copy anyone; it has its own identity, from the HVAC controls to the modern color combinations. Everything seems elegant." -- Motor Trend
  • "The interior wows at first glance, and the fine attention to detail continues to impress as the miles rack up. For example, there's a padded section on the center console to provide a soft place for the driver's right knee to rub against. And it is quilted. Some rivals just have you rub against hard plastic. A luxury vehicle's cabin should look and feel special, and the GV80 sets a high standard." -- Consumer Reports
  • "The GV80 had me the moment I climbed aboard. Its beautifully executed interior is indisputable evidence that Genesis understands the not-so-secret handshake of luxury–something that several aspiring premium-car brands have yet to learn. We humans are exceptionally talented at picking up visual detail, and the GV80 is rife with it. Delicate satin-metal highlights. Carefully stitched leather on the dash, seats, and doors. Knurled knobs and switches. Tight, precise assembly. It all makes the GV80 feel much more expensive than it is." -- Car and Driver

Cargo

The Genesis doesn't have the most cargo room in the luxury midsize SUV class, but it provides a useful amount of space and comes standard with a hand-free power liftgate. Even better, the rear seats fold flat, making it easier to load and organize cargo.

  • "Yes, a power-folding third row is available, but only on a single upper-midrange trim with the larger engine. With the way this plus-two setup eats into cargo space while only offering tight seating accommodations, I'd recommend sticking with a two-row model. For those keeping track, cargo space behind the optional third row is a modest 11.6 cubic feet. Space behind the second row is a more substantial 33.9 cubes, and if you fold all the seats behind the front row, you're looking at 84 cubic feet, a figure that edges out the Mercedes GLE-Class and trounces the BMW X5." -- CNET
  • "… the third row isn't even large enough to justify its existence, and it reduces your storage space from 33.9 cubic feet to 11.6 when the seats are up. Skip the third row entirely and owners have 84 cubic feet in the back." -- Jalopnik
  • "… And the rear seats fold fully flat, creating a huge cargo area." -- Motor Trend

Seating

The GV80 seats five people in its standard two-row configuration, though it's also available in a three-row setup, which seats up to seven. Standard features include synthetic leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, and heated front seats.

Genuine leather upholstery, Nappa leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, power-adjustable rear seats, a rear-seat reminder, and a heated steering wheel are available.

The front seats are incredibly plush. They provide lots of space, and drivers enjoy good forward visibility. The second-row seats are similarly accommodating. In three-row models, the rearmost seats are pretty cramped, and most adults won't want to ride back there.

For installing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the second-row outboard seats and a tether anchor for the second-row middle seat.

  • "And every material from the dark open-pore wood to the satin-metal trim to the leather that covers the posh front seats fits so exactly, you'd think it had been done by hand. That level of luxury continues into the second row, where occupants enjoy plush heated seats and their own climate controls along with big-luxury-sedan levels of legroom." -- Car and Driver
  • "For the most part, the GV80 has a 2-row/5-passenger setup. There is an optional 3-row/7-passenger setup, but it's only available on one well-equipped V6 model. And that third row is very tight." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The front seats are wide, with a thick torso bolster. They proved to be supremely comfortable and supportive, while still soft and welcoming. There are so many adjustments that people of all sizes should be able to find a suitable position." -- Consumer Reports

Interior Features

Standard features in the GV80 include dual-zone automatic climate control, a 14.5-inch display, navigation, a 12-speaker audio system, HD Radio, satellite radio, four USB ports, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

The GV80 features an enormous infotainment display that's easy to see and has crisp graphics. It has a few touch-sensitive aspects, but most of the system is controlled via a rotary controller on the center console. It works similarly to one of the original iPods, and it can also recognize handwriting and allows pinching and swiping motions. Most critics agree that the infotainment system is intuitive and easy to use, but a few think it's overly complicated and distracting.

Available features include a panoramic sunroof, tri-zone automatic climate control, wireless device charging, and a 21-speaker Lexicon audio system.

Standard driver assistance features include a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, forward collision warning, front and rear cross traffic alert, pedestrian detection, forward automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, lane change assist, blind spot monitoring, vehicle exit warning, and driver drowsiness monitoring.

Available active safety features include a head-up display, a blind spot camera, a surround-view parking camera system, reverse automatic emergency braking, and remote smart parking assist, which slightly adjusts positioning after parking, if necessary.

  • "The knobs and dials are intuitive to navigate, and the few touchscreen buttons that you must deal with are for the creature comforts. Even so, these buttons respond with both tactile and audible feedback, making them feel closer to real buttons. Its direct, easy-to-use, non-distracting infotainment system even comes with some nice nature sound settings to really relax the driver." -- Jalopnik
  • "Then there's the 14.5-inch widescreen infotainment system with its high resolution and sparkling graphics … Manipulated via touchscreen or a large jog wheel with integrated directional click ring (not unlike iPods of yore) and a center handwriting recognition pad, the GV80's infotainment system is new and powerful, yet it's surprisingly easy to get accustomed to its tile-based layout." -- CNET
  • "… The shape and location of the screen put it close to the line of sight, but the far end is a reach for the driver. That issue is remedied by the presence of a console-mounted click-wheel although its design is less user-friendly than BMW's iDrive controller. The wheel is flush mounted and has a concave shape, not unlike an old-school iPod. It provides some separation of feel from the dial shifter just aft of it and the smaller drive-mode dial just to the right, but turning the inset click-wheel is awkward. Similarly, jogging the click-wheel up, down, forward, or back is harder to do than with a surface-mounted version." -- Autoblog
