2019 Genesis G90 Performance Review

Performance: 8.2

The 2019 Genesis G90 comes with a standard V6 engine and a V8 in the upper trim, both of which deliver enough power for all driving situations. There's not much difference between the engines in terms of driving feel, and neither gets great gas mileage. The G90 handles with balance and composure, and it delivers a comfortable ride even over rough pavement.

  • "Not all luxury sedans are optimized to be road-going missiles, but that doesn't permit them to be slugs, either. The G90's base turbo V6 engine is more than sufficient to get the job done, and the adaptive suspension and AWD system allow the G90 to easily tackle a curve or two." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "[The] G90 has this creamy luxuriousness to it like an experienced pour of Irish stout." -- Motor Trend (2017)
  • "The engine is really the best part of the G90 we tested. There's no rubber-banding as the turbos spool up. To put it another way, it's a turbo V6 doing a great interpretation of a well-tuned, large displacement V8." -- Autoblog (2017)

Acceleration and Power

The G90 comes standard with a 3.3-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine that puts out 365 horsepower. The upper trim features a 420-horsepower 5.0-liter V8. Both engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The base engine feels fairly energetic and moves the G90 easily in most situations. In fact, it provides enough power and acceleration that you may not even want to step up to the V8, which doesn't feel much different from the V6 despite its additional horsepower. The transmission shifts smoothly, but not everyone agrees that it downshifts quickly enough for passing other vehicles on the highway.

According to EPA estimates, the G90 gets 17 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway with its base engine. The numbers are nearly identical with the V8, at 16 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. These are among the worst fuel economy ratings in the class.

  • "The twin-turbo V6 has enough low-end thrust that you won't miss having a V8. It sprints to 60 mph in about 5.5 seconds, which keeps pace with the rest of the segment. But the automatic transmission lacks response on full-throttle kickdowns, so you have to time those passing maneuvers carefully." -- Edmunds
  • "The G90 V6 feels light in spite of its 4,600-pound curb weight, and not big at all, and it's quick when you want it to be. … There's almost no indication the engine is turbocharged – not from noise or legitimate lag or throttle response – and the torque band is as wide as they come. There's nothing obvious to complain about in the transmission, either. Upshifts are positive under hard throttle and almost imperceptible at a casual pace. Downshifts come quickly, and the G90 is happy to drop two, three gears at a time." -- Autoweek (2017)
  • "The V-6 proves more than competent enough in daily driving, and our editors agreed after driving both that there's no compelling reason to move up to the V-8, because they feel similar dynamically." -- Motor Trend (2017)

Handling and Braking

The G90 feels most at home as a cruising vehicle, delivering a smooth and stable ride that lets you glide down the road without noticing pavement imperfections. This large sedan handles well on winding roads, but it won’t satisfy thrill seekers. An adaptive suspension comes standard, and you can choose from four different driving modes: Normal, Eco, Sport, and Smart. Rear-wheel drive comes standard, and all-wheel drive is available.

  • "The G90 does a fairly good job of cornering at speed when asked. All-wheel drive helps put all that power to the pavement, though the stability control steps in and shuts the party down if a whiff of wheelspin occurs." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "Brake feel is satisfyingly firm and responsive, body motions are kept nicely in check, and the electrically assisted steering is relatively hefty, with secure on-center tracking and a modicum of feedback." -- Car and Driver (2017)
  • "When you're cruising in traffic it's smooth and quiet, and at speed, the ride borders right on the edge of being too soft, but is still perfectly acceptable. The G90 is the kind of car you could drive for hours on end and arrive feeling relaxed and refreshed." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
