2018 Genesis G90 Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2018 Genesis G90 was new.

Performance: 8.8

The 2018 Genesis G90 combines strong engine performance, a cushioned ride, and competent handling. The base V6 engine is more than up to the task of moving the G90. The optional V8 makes more power, but you’ll hardly notice it. The G90 is buttery smooth and has an adaptive suspension to personalize your ride according to your driving style.

  • "Not all luxury sedans are optimized to be road-going missiles, but that doesn't permit them to be slugs, either. The G90's base turbo V6 engine is more than sufficient to get the job done, and the adaptive suspension and AWD system allow the G90 to easily tackle a curve or two." -- Edmunds
  • "[The] G90 has this creamy luxuriousness to it like an experienced pour of Irish stout." -- Motor Trend (2017)
  • "The engine is really the best part of the G90 we tested. There's no rubber-banding as the turbos spool up. To put it another way, it's a turbo V6 doing a great interpretation of a well-tuned, large displacement V8." -- Autoblog (2017)

Acceleration and Power

The base model comes equipped with a 3.3-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine, which is good for 365 horsepower. A 420-horsepower 5.0-liter V8 is available. With either engine, acceleration is quick. Although the V8 has more power, most drivers won’t notice much of a difference in thrust between it and the V6. The standard eight-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly and doesn’t hesitate to downshift when you need more power.

With the V6, the G90 returns 17 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway, regardless of drivetrain. The V8 engine with rear-wheel drive returns 16/24 mpg city/highway, dropping by 1 mpg when it’s equipped with all-wheel drive. Most of the G90’s classmates achieve high fuel economy ratings.

  • "Overall drivability is great. The fuel-efficient Eco mode is conservative but not so anemic that you never want to use it. Normal mode delivers smooth but alert characteristics for everyday driving, and Sport sharpens everything by an enjoyable degree." -- Edmunds
  • "The G90 V6 feels light in spite of its 4,600-pound curb weight, and not big at all, and it's quick when you want it to be. We're not talking about acceleration toward infinity as one can experience in a 12-cylinder Bentley, but strong, invigorating bursts when it's time [to] make up ground or get clear of a pack. There's almost no indication the engine is turbocharged – not from noise or legitimate lag or throttle response – and the torque band is as wide as they come. There's nothing obvious to complain about in the transmission, either. Upshifts are positive under hard throttle and almost imperceptible at a casual pace. Downshifts come quickly, and the G90 is happy to drop two, three gears at a time." -- Autoweek (2017)
  • "The V-6 proves more than competent enough in daily driving, and our editors agreed after driving both that there's no compelling reason to move up to the V-8, because they feel similar dynamically." -- Motor Trend (2017)

Handling and Braking

Although the G90 has good agility around turns, it’s more of a comfortable cruiser than a canyon carver. Its steering feels heavy, but it offers appropriate feedback. The G90 has a pleasantly smooth ride. An adaptive suspension comes standard, which works alongside five driving modes: Normal, Eco, Sport, Individual, and Smart. Smart mode automatically adjusts to the driving mode that best matches your current driving behavior. Rear-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive is available in both trims. The G90’s brakes are strong and respond right when you need them to.

  • "The G90 does a fairly good job of cornering at speed when asked. All-wheel drive helps put all that power to the pavement, though the stability control steps in and shuts the party down if a whiff of wheelspin occurs." -- Edmunds
  • "Brake feel is satisfyingly firm and responsive, body motions are kept nicely in check, and the electrically assisted steering is relatively hefty, with secure on-center tracking and a modicum of feedback." -- Car and Driver (2017)
  • "When you're cruising in traffic it's smooth and quiet, and at speed, the ride borders right on the edge of being too soft, but is still perfectly acceptable. The G90 is the kind of car you could drive for hours on end and arrive feeling relaxed and refreshed." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
