2019 Genesis G80 Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2019 Genesis G80 was new.

Interior: 8.6

The 2019 Genesis G80 is close to perfect inside. First-class materials cover every surface, the styling is sophisticated, and the seats are comfortable. It comes standard with more safety and tech features than most similarly priced rivals, and the infotainment system is refreshingly uncomplicated. Trunk space is decent, and a clever hands-free system is standard.

  • "The Genesis G80 for 2018 includes a leather-lined, 5-passenger interior among the roomiest in its class, making it a pleasurable place for all occupants. In addition to its sheer space, we appreciate the Genesis' layout. Though it offers all the trappings of a luxury car … controls are remarkably easy to use. The G80 also offers buttons and knobs that are a snap to use." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • "Materials on the dash, doors and seats are as good as any in the class, and there's not a visible interior piece or panel with even a whiff of cost-cutting. Meticulous level of assembly matches just about any premium German or Japanese sedan." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "The first thing you notice after climbing behind the G80's wheel is the pervasive air of quality. The cabin is airy and spacious. … Fit and finish are top notch. The seats are covered in first-rate perforated leather with attractive contrasting piping. Handsome matte-finish grained wood adorns the dash." -- Automobile Magazine (2017)

The G80 is a midsize sedan with five seats. The G80's large front seats, plush cushions, and serene cabin make for a comfortable day on the road. Leather upholstery is standard, along with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and heated front seats that feature 12-way power adjustments. Seating upgrades include premium leather upholstery, a 16-way power-adjustable driver's seat, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, manual rear-side window and power rear window sunshades, and front sport seats with extra support.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the G80's LATCH system a Marginal rating (the second-lowest) for its ease of use. The three tether anchors are relatively easy to locate and identify, but it's difficult to install a child safety seat using the lower anchors, which are located on the rear outboard seats.

  • "A priority for any luxury sedan should be comfort, and the G80 gets it right. Seat support and ride comfort are more than adequate for long-distance hauls, and the cabin is well-isolated against wind noise and other unpleasantries." -- Edmunds
  • "The front seats rate high in overall comfort, and the driving position offers a good view out." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • "Riding in the G80 is a pleasant experience; it does a good job with sound isolation from the outside world, and I found the seats to be comfortable both front and back." -- Cars.com (2017)

Interior Features

Every G80 comes with an abundant number of features. In addition to an impressive suite of standard safety features, the infotainment system is abnormally easy to use for a luxury car. The interface is straightforward, the touch-screen displays are responsive, and the companion buttons are convenient.

The base infotainment system comes with an 8-inch touch screen, navigation, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, satellite radio, HD Radio, Bluetooth, a USB port, and seven speakers. Additional standard features include forward collision warning with automatic braking and pedestrian detection, a driver attention monitor, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, rain-sensing windshield wipers, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, a rearview camera, a proximity entry key, push-button start, and dual-zone automatic climate control.

Available options include a 9.2-inch touch screen, a 17-speaker Quantum Logic surround-sound system, a wireless charging pad, adaptive LED headlights, parking sensors, a surround-view camera, and a head-up display.

  • "The G80 may not be pioneering new technology, but it comes loaded with a ton of features that most people will use every day. From Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to telematics that allow you to control certain functions through an app remotely, the G80 is definitely a car of the modern era." -- Edmunds
  • "A multifunction knob behind the shifter controls things and it's a good size, fitting the hand nicely. Menus are intuitively ordered and the most commonly used operations are no more than a few clicks away." -- Cars.com (2017)
  • "Using a dial and buttons on the console, I could use navigation, phone and audio systems. Although that dial makes alphanumeric entries tedious, the LCD is actually a touchscreen, so I could lean forward and quickly type in a street address. Of course, I could turn to Google search to find places based on keywords, which was also very fast." -- CNET (2017)

The G80 has a 15.3-cubic-foot trunk, which is a typical size for this class. It features a pass-through opening for skis and comes with a hands-free system that automatically opens the trunk when you are behind the car and the key fob is on your person – no waving of the foot required. The rear seats don't fold flat, however. A power trunk lid is optional.

  • "… the G80's trunk is on the larger side of the segment. The trunk opens wide, and the hinges are protected so there's no risk of smashing luggage when put in the back. But the rear seats don't fold, and the ski pass-through is on the small side." -- Edmunds
  • "It's also equipped with a standard smart trunk, which opens automatically when you stand behind the G80 with the key fob on you. If you get close enough, it will flash the turn signals and beep three times before opening. I prefer this approach to the one used by other automakers, which requires you to wave your foot under the rear bumper and do a one-footed jig, which can be difficult when your hands are full." -- Cars.com (2017)
