Genesis G70 Versus the Competition

Genesis G70 vs. BMW 3 Series

The BMW 3 Series is a very good luxury small car, and it rivals the Genesis for engaging performance. Both sports sedans have robust engines, swift acceleration, and athletic handling. The BMW has more room for passengers and cargo, as well as superior fuel economy ratings, but the Genesis has more opulent cabin materials and a higher predicted reliability rating. There’s no wrong choice between these luxury cars in a side-by-side comparison.

Genesis G70 vs. Kia Stinger

The Kia Stinger and the Genesis G70 are both products of the Hyundai Motor Company. Both luxury sedans have a standard turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a twin-turbo V6 option. Both also have opulent interiors and comparable fuel economy estimates. The Stinger offers a larger trunk and a more accommodating back seat, but the G70 has more standard safety features. You can’t go wrong choosing between these sedans.

G70 Interior: Handsome Interior, Small Cabin

G70 Cargo Space

The G70 has a 10.5-cubic-foot trunk, which is small compared to rival sedans. However, the rear seats can fold to provide a bit more room. A hands-free trunk lid is standard, and a power trunk lid is available.

How Many People Does the G70 Seat?

Five people can sit in this vehicle. Synthetic leather upholstery, a 12-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and an eight-way power-adjustable front passenger seat are standard. Several upgrades are available, including genuine leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a 12-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, a power-adjustable steering wheel, and a heated steering wheel.

This Genesis is a driver-centric car. The front seats have plenty of bolstering to keep you in place around hairpin turns. Space up front is decent, which is more than can be said for the rear, where a sloping roofline intrudes on headroom. Legroom is tight too.

G70 and Child Car Seats

There are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the rear middle seat. The lower anchors are set deeply in the seats and can be hard to maneuver around.

G70 Interior Quality

Genesis is the luxury-brand spinoff of Hyundai, and that luxury status shines through in the G70. Build quality is top-notch, and premium materials abound. Some models have upscale touches like quilted leather upholstery or aluminum trim.

G70 Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation

The G70 has a feature-rich infotainment system, but some critics claim that the touch screen lags when responding to user input. However, there are lots of physical buttons and dials mounted below the touch screen that provide quick access to climate and audio settings.

  • Standard infotainment features: an 8-inch touch screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a six-speaker sound system, HD Radio, satellite radio, Bluetooth, and two USB ports
  • Available infotainment features: navigation, wireless device charging, and a 15-speaker Lexicon stereo
  • Additional standard features: proximity keyless entry, push-button start, and dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Other available features: a sunroof

G70 Performance: Well-Blended Fun

G70 Engine

You have a choice of two engines in this sedan. Genesis designates them by 2.0T and 3.3T monikers. The 2.0T trim comes with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine rated at 252 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. Paired with this engine is either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission. This turbocharged engine is well-suited for daily drives, and power and acceleration are both adequate, but the automatic transmission is a hair less responsive than the setups in rivals from Mercedes-Benz or BMW.

For something stronger, consider the 3.3T and its 3.3-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine. It makes 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque. The sole transmission option is the eight-speed automatic. This powertrain is also optional in the Genesis G80 and standard in the G90.

G70 Gas Mileage

The G70 with the turbo-four engine earns an EPA-estimated 22 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. Those are the best ratings for this car, but they’re poor for a small luxury sedan. Adding all-wheel drive lowers those figures to 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway, and models with the manual transmission clock in at 18/28 mpg.

With the larger engine, this vehicle gets 17 mpg in the city and 26 or 25 mpg on the highway, depending on if it has rear-wheel drive or AWD.

G70 Ride and Handling

Handling is one of this sedan’s strong suits. It’s fun to drive, with controlled body lean, strong brakes, and responsive steering that provides a good amount of feedback. Available performance upgrades such as Brembo brakes or an adaptive suspension make handling even sharper. The ride is comfortable too, with few road flaws permeating the cabin. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available.

The Final Call

The Genesis G70 stands out among luxury small cars largely because of its top-notch predicted reliability rating, elegant cabin materials, and well-blended balance of lithe handling with a pillowy ride. Shoppers interested in a small sports sedan should leave a spot on their shortlist for this vehicle. However, those after greater practicality for carrying passengers or cargo may want to look elsewhere.

Don’t just take our word for it. Check out comments from some of the reviews that drive our rankings and analysis.
