2019 Genesis G70 Interior Review

Interior: 8.1

The interior of the 2019 Genesis G70 is very well made and luxurious. Surface are covered in first-class materials, and it's apparent that Genesis considered every level of detail. The G70 also boasts an impressive amount of standard safety features, as well as a user-friendly infotainment system. Where this luxury car comes up short is in the back seat and trunk, where its dimensions are middling.

  • "The look is very deliberate – it's all very fresh and even a bit gallant – but there's no flash for the sake of flash. In fact, there's a sense of simplicity when you view the interior or exterior from afar. Under close scrutiny, though, you can't help see the enormous attention to detail, from the copper-colored elements in the lighting to the way the stitching avoids the perforation of the leather to the smooth animation of the 'door ajar' graphics on the instrument panel as you close the door." -- Autoblog
  • "In terms of comfort, quiet and materials quality, the G70 checks all the luxury boxes. The seats support a full day of driving comfort, and the quilted leather found on mid- and high-level trims looks and feels great. Around the cabin you'll find more leather and soft-touch materials alongside real aluminum trim and knurling on the plastic knobs. Genesis keeps getting better at this part of the equation, and the G70 benefits with an interior that looks and feels like it belongs in a luxury vehicle." -- Edmunds
  • "Inside, the vehicle's cabin offers competitive but not class-leading space - you'll be better coddled in the back seat of a BMW 3 Series. Still there's startling quality to be found in the materials used throughout the passenger compartment, particularly with the quilted Nappa leather seats of its range-topping trims." -- New York Daily News

The Genesis G70 is a quiet, comfortable five-person sedan with passenger space dimensions that are average for a luxury small car. In real world terms, that means the front seats are relaxing enough for a full day on the road, and the back seat is best occupied by kids. Cloth upholstery, a 12-way power-adjustable driver's seat, and an eight-way power-adjustable front passenger seat come standard. Upgrades such as leather seats (including a Nappa leather option), heated and ventilated front seats, and heated rear seats are available. To secure child safety seats, the back seat has three top tether anchors, and two sets of lower anchors.

  • "Slide into the cabin and you're greeted with an abundance of soft-touch surfaces, accent stitching, aluminum trim and comfortable and generously bolstered seats that snuggly hold passengers in place. Sound deadening efforts are also apparent." -- CNET
  • "The front seat is low, wide, and shapely, with mild bolsters. A range of drivers found the seats to be comfortable, helped by the four-way lumbar adjustments. This G70 offers an interesting novelty: The torso bolsters on the V6 model become more snug when Sport mode is selected. This extra hug helps keep the driver planted during enthusiastic driving." -- Consumer Reports
  • "The compact G70's shorter length means it has less trunk space and less rear-seat room than the midsize Stinger. The back seat is quite tight — there's less rear leg- and headroom than the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series or Mercedes C-Class. In practice, it's a space best reserved for children or small adults." -- Edmunds

Interior Features

The G70 comes with a remarkable amount of standard technology given its price point. Its infotainment system includes an 8-inch display, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HD Radio, and three USB ports. Lots of advanced safety systems are included, such as forward collision avoidance with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, lane keep assist, automatic high beams, driver attention monitoring, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert. Dual automatic climate control and a proximity key with push-button start are also standard. Available options include a 15-speaker surround-sound system, navigation, a sunroof, wireless charging for smartphones, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and front and rear parking sensors.

Unlike the overly complicated infotainment systems of some luxury brands, the G70's system is refreshingly simple and easy to use. Genesis starts off on the right foot by including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in every G70, both of which allow for seamless integration with many of your favorite smartphone apps. Though the system is straightforward, some reviewers feel it comes up short on luxury car prestige, as Genesis uses a similar interface as those employed in Kia and Hyundai vehicles.

  • "My biggest complaint concerns the LCD screens on the instrument panel and infotainment systems: They use fonts and graphics identical to Hyundai and Kia models, which clashes with the elegance of the interior. Hyundai really ought to reskin the graphics and give the Genesis cars their own look." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "Since we're starting with the bad news, here's the rest: The technology isn't fully competitive with luxury compacts. While the G70 has everything you expect from a luxury car, from standard active safety features and driver aids to a head-up display and support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, the look and feel of everything is distinctly Hyundai. That means it all works and it's easy to use, but it lacks the visual appeal baked into the German brands." -- Edmunds
  • "The controls are a model of simplicity, easy to read and operate, with the exception of the touch screen. We found it to be a far reach when drivers want to change modes, settings, and navigation-functions that aren't easily conducted using steering-wheel controls." -- Consumer Reports

The G70 has a 10.5-cubic-foot trunk, which is below average for a luxury small car. A 60/40 split-folding rear seat is standard, as is a hands-free trunk lid that opens automatically when you stand behind the car with the proximity key.
