Fusion Hybrid vs. Fusion Energi: Which Ford Hybrid Should You Buy?

Ford builds three versions of their midsize Fusion sedan: the gasoline-only Fusion, the gasoline and electric Fusion Hybrid, and the Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid. They share a common platform and many features, but each has its own personality. All three move into 2018 with only minor changes from 2017.

If you're looking for a fuel-efficient option, you'll want to pick either the 2018 Ford Fusion Hybrid or 2018 Ford Fusion Energi. The Fusion Hybrid uses a blend of gasoline and electric power that is generated onboard the car. Its batteries are charged by the gasoline engine and by recapturing energy when you apply the brakes or coast.

The Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid uses a similar propulsion system to the Hybrid, but its battery pack can also charge from an external power source, such as a standard electrical outlet or an electric vehicle charging station. In our rankings of midsize sedans, the Fusion Hybrid holds a spot about two-thirds of the way down the list, and the Fusion Energi ranks near the bottom.
