2014 Ford Taurus Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2014 Ford Taurus was new.

Interior: 7.7

Some critics call the 2014 Ford Taurus’ interior styling and materials elegant and high-quality, while others say they look dated and cheap. Most test drivers agree that the front seats are comfortable, and the Taurus has a very large trunk for the class. Still, many reviewers write that the optional MyFord Touch infotainment system is difficult to use.

  • "The Taurus' functionality and backseat are overshadowed, however, by the antiquated and messy aesthetics of the front of the cabin. An abundance of black plastic surfaces gives this brand-new vehicle the look of a gently used rental car." -- Cars.com
  • "The 2014 Ford Taurus offers a classy-looking cabin, particularly with the MyFord Touch system installed." -- Edmunds
  • "The 2014 Ford Taurus is a big, heavy, full-size sedan that offers plenty of interior and cargo space." -- Automobile Magazine

The Ford Taurus seats five and comes standard with cloth upholstery and six-way power-adjustable front seats. Optional features include leather upholstery, 10-way power-adjustable front seats, heated and cooled front seats, power-adjustable pedals and a power tilt and telescoping steering wheel. Reviewers say that the front seats are roomy and comfortable and have a wide range of adjustments. However, several test drivers write that thick roof pillars partially obstruct the driver’s view out of the sides of the car. While a few reviewers say that the Taurus’ back seat could be more spacious, most automotive journalists agree that it offers ample room. Additionally, a few reviewers appreciate that it can accommodate three baby seats.

  • "The seating is quite comfortable, especially with the optional high-tech multicontour front seats with built-in massage. The backseat offers generous head- and legroom, even for taller adults, along with rear HVAC vents and available heated seats." -- Edmunds
  • "The Taurus' possible saving grace, however, is as a family pack mule, with a backseat that can fit three kids or three child-safety seats across, plus trunk space to schlep even the most challengingly large family loads." -- Cars.com
  • "The view from the Taurus' driver's seat isn't bad, although we found the wide B-pillar just behind the driver's head and the front windshield pillars to be rather thick, obstructing our side view." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Overall, the car's biggest sore spot is the rear seat. It's not as roomy or comfortable as the car's large exterior dimensions would suggest." -- Consumer Guide (2013)

Interior Features

The 2014 Ford Taurus comes standard with a six-speaker audio system and an auxiliary input, which is a bit less standard equipment than what many cars in the class have. Optional features include dual-zone automatic climate control, Ford’s SYNC system, which includes a USB port and Bluetooth and allows you to control connected devices with voice commands, Ford’s MyFord Touch infotainment system, navigation, a moonroof, push-button start, satellite radio, HD Radio and a 12-speaker Sony sound system. The Taurus also has several optional driver assistance features, including blind spot monitoring, a rearview camera, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and an automatic self-parking system.

While Ford’s optional MyFord Touch infotainment system includes a touch screen to access audio, climate control and navigation settings, many reviewers say that it has confusing on-screen menus and responds slowly to user inputs. Still, test drivers say that the 2014 Taurus offers clear gauges, and that other controls are easy to use.

  • "Inside, the 2014 Taurus incorporates the latest versions of the Sync voice control and MyFord Touch touchscreen interface systems. Unquestionably, these systems bring the Taurus into the modern era by expanding functionality and connectivity options in the cabin. But we've found that it takes time to acclimate, especially if you're accustomed to driving a car with a more traditional control layout." -- Edmunds
  • "While Ford and Microsoft have theoretically improved the MyFord Touch system, there's still a general lag in touch-response time, not to mention the cluttered and confusing interface that's impossible to interact with without removing your eyes from the road. If my $200 iPhone can react instantaneously when I touch it, a $35,000 car with touch-screen technology should be at least as quick and easy to use." -- Cars.com
  • "Brightly lit gauges are easy to read. Most controls are handy and self evident." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
  • "Meanwhile, the MyFord Touch system that controls everything from climate to navigation and radio tuning is simpler to use, yet still requires patience to figure out." -- Kelley Blue Book (2013)

With its split-folding rear seats and 20.1 cubic feet of cargo space, the 2014 Ford Taurus has one of the largest trunks among affordable large cars. Test drivers say that the Taurus offers ample trunk space, with more than enough room for multiple golf bags or a weekend’s worth of shopping.

  • "The 20.1 cubic feet of trunk space in the Taurus was the most voluminous in our Challenge thanks to the Taurus' recessed floor. It allowed a shocking 10 golf bags to be piled in. Hockey sticks, backpacks, sleeping bags and Costco runs can all be swallowed without so much as a burp from the Taurus." -- Cars.com
  • "At 20.1 cubic feet, the trunk is one of the largest you'll find in any sedan." -- Edmunds
  • "The trunk is wide and deep, with an opening large enough to accommodate fairly substantial cargo." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
