2012 Ford Super Duty Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2012 Ford Super Duty was new.

Interior: 8.7

The Ford Super Duty offers one of the most useful interiors in the class, and depending on the trim, can be fairly luxurious. Reviewers say that its front seats are more comfortable than most in the class, and back seats in extended cab and crew cab models offer plenty of space, even for adults. Ford’s Work Solutions in-dash computer earns rave reviews for its functionality and convenience, and the premium King Ranch trims are outfitted like luxury sedans. Base trim levels include lots of hard plastic and vinyl, with limited standard features, but this is typical for the class. Reviewers say that even basic trims are comfortable and well laid-out. However, one tester notes that the Ram HD can give the Ford’s interior a run for its money.

  • "The truck's gentler side offers comfortable seating and interior amenities to soothe the soul on long trips. For the hard worker or commercial owner, there's a long list of available packages, options and features that fit their needs and possibly enhance productivity.” -- Edmunds
  • "Inside is a truly spacious and comfortable cab loaded with features, from a Productivity Screen that gives you a trailer towing checklist to an in-dash computer with Internet access and SYNC.” -- AutoWeek
  • "There's plenty of space inside the cabin, which can easily fit the top five strongest men in the world. The interior feels both plush and down to business.” -- The Detroit News
  • "Uplevel Lariat models have fairly fancy decor. Though their leather upholstery is more durable than rich, the overall atmosphere belies the Super Duty's work-truck leanings.” -- Consumer Guide
  • “For those who understand that the nature of their work is going to trash the truck's interior no matter how well it's put together, Ford builds the base XL truck with a pretty Spartan interior that can take a beating and cleans up easily.” -- Kelley Blue Book

Super Duty trucks can seat anywhere from three people in Regular Cab models to six people in properly configured Crew Cabs. Regular Cabs are offered with either a front bench seat that holds three people or two front bucket seats. Reviewers say the Super Duty’s seats are particularly comfortable.

Base XL models come with vinyl or optional cloth seats, but upmarket trims like the Lariat and King Ranch include standard features like leather-appointed interiors with heated and cooled 10-way adjustable seats. Reviewers say that the back seat in SuperCabs offers adequate, though not spacious, legroom for adults, while the Crew Cab’s full-size rear seat offers just as much space as a luxury sedan.

  • "The rear bench seat is not as plush as the front buckets, but overall room is more like a long-wheelbase car than a pickup truck.” -- Consumer Guide
  • "This is exactly the type of seating we’d want for long days in the saddle, year in and year out.” -- PickupTrucks.com
  • "Back seat drivers will find car-like comfort in a limo-sized seating area that can accommodate three adults.” -- Left Lane News
  • "Inside, the seats provide plenty of soft leather and cushioning, but won't lull you to sleep on a long drive.” -- Motor Trend

Interior Features

Though reviewers think that the Ford Super Duty’s interior appearance could use a little updating, they unanimously rave about its wealth of available features. The automotive press loves Ford’s Work Solutions in-dash computer system, which includes software to track down tools, a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot, a Crew Chief program that allows the boss to keep track of his or her fleet and even a printer. As with all pickup trucks, lower-end trim levels include easy-to-clean hard plastics and only the most basic features. The base F-250 XL includes manual air conditioning, a tilt and telescopic steering wheel, vinyl seats and an AM/FM radio.

However, putting up the extra cash for the top-of-the-line King Ranch can get you a truck outfitted like a luxury sedan, with standard adjustable pedals, 10-way power-adjustable heated and cooled leather front seats, Ford’s SYNC infotainment system and rear parking sensors.

One test driver notes that some controls require a long stretch to reach from the driver’s seat, but that’s fairly common in most big trucks and SUVs.

  • "Ford's integration of high-end electronic features is another top selling point for the Super Duty.” -- Edmunds
  • “The King Ranch package pushes the Super Duty's cab into the realm of Lincoln-like luxury, offering an interior so inviting you'll probably have your mud-covered work crew hitching a ride in the truck's long bed.” -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Most functions are logically arrayed on the dashboard, but some climate and audio controls are just out of easy reach. A few supplementary functions require a long look away from the road, but the available Sync system's voice commands do help.” -- Consumer Guide

Behind the first row of seats in SuperCab models there is a maximum 39.5 cubic feet of cargo space. Crew Cab models offer 58.6 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. Reviewers are impressed with the amount of storage features inside the Super Duty, especially in Crew Cab models. Rear under-seat lockable storage compartments that can hold hunting gear or other valuables are available on select models.

  • "These Fords are on par with their domestic heavy-duty rivals, with plenty of in-cab storage. The available tailgate step is a welcome convenience, and one we highly recommend.” -- Consumer Guide
  • "Storage and utility options abound in the Ford F-250.” -- Edmunds
  • "The only thing missing was a second glove box, a feature other pickups offer and a great place to keep a gun -- as long as it is registered and you possess a concealed weapons permit (state laws do apply). There is, however, lockable storage under the second-row seat, a feature hunters will greatly appreciate. And there are lots of cubbies and storage features throughout.” -- The Detroit News
