2011 Ford Ranger Overview

Reviewers said the 2011 Ford Ranger is a decent compact pickup, but compared with more modern rivals, its ride feels somewhat harsh. Critics said little about the base four-cylinder engine, as most tested models equipped with the V6. The V6 was generally liked, but some reviewers would have liked more power, especially for towing or hauling. Two- and four-wheel drive were available, and either engine was available with a manual or automatic transmission. The 2011 Ford Ranger achieves 19/24 mpg city/highway with the base engine and automatic transmission, which is typical for the class. The Ranger can tow up to 5,800 pounds with the V6.

Many reviewers noted the Ranger’s aging design on the inside as well, saying the dash is made with lots of cheap plastics. Still, some appreciated the straightforward layout of the controls. Regular cab models have seats for up to three people, while the extended cab has two small rear jump seats that boost seating capacity to five. Reviewers had few qualms with the front seats, but most agreed that the rear jump seats are best left to small kids. The base XL trim is sparsely equipped, with standard features like air conditioning and a basic stereo. Features that were available include power windows, door locks and mirrors, front bucket seats and an upgraded stereo with satellite radio and an auxiliary input jack.

Other Trucks to Consider

The 2011 Nissan Frontier was well-liked by reviewers for its comfortable interior and smooth, potent V6 engine. The Frontier is also available as a crew cab and has a better safety score.

Reviewers said the 2011 Toyota Tacoma is a well-rounded truck, with a well-built interior and spacious cabin, especially in crew-cab form. They also liked its available V6, which allows the Tacoma to tow heavier trailers than the Ranger.
