2019 Ford Mustang Interior Review

Interior: 7.1

Ford artfully blends old with new inside the 2019 Mustang. Throwback elements such as toggle switches give the cabin a retro feel, but lots of cutting-edge technology is also present. The front seats and trunk are pleasantly spacious, but few will raise their hand to sit in the cramped back seat.

  • "There's just enough retro character to keep some Mustang nostalgia alive, but not so much that it affects how everything functions and feels. The controls are thoughtfully placed. In almost every way, its interior is better than that of rival Chevy Camaro." -- Edmunds
  • "While all 2016 Mustang models get a coolly retro-yet-modern interior style, Premium Mustang models justify their added cost with better materials and features." -- Kelley Blue Book (2016)
  • "A swath of material that looks like engine-turned aluminum cuts a handsome horizontal line across the cabin, the armrests are padded leather and adorned with yellow contrast stitching, the instruments and gauges are high-quality and look nice, and fun details such as 'ground speed' on the speedometer complete the feel. The interior makes you feel like you're in something special." -- Motor Trend (2016)

The Mustang is a two-plus-two muscle car. A few variants (such as the Shelby GT350R) delete the back seat entirely, reducing the number of seats from four to two. Cloth upholstery, manually adjustable front seats, and a 50/50 split-folding rear seat are standard. Ford also offers heated, ventilated, and power-adjustable front seats, along with leather-trimmed seats, Recaro sport seats, and Alcantara seat and door inserts. Both rear seats have a full set of LATCH connections, which includes two lower anchors and one tether anchor.

Tall drivers will appreciate the Mustang's generous front-seat legroom, and the seats themselves are supportive and comfy. Quarters in the back are confined, however. Children and small adolescents can squeeze in alright, but anyone larger will want to keep their stint in this zone short.

  • "You'll remain comfortable in the Mustang's saddle for hours, which is quite a feat considering how performance-focused it is. The seats are supportive and the cabin is fairly quiet save for some road noise and the V8 engine's burble." -- Edmunds
  • "The standard buckets offer plenty of bolstering for spirited on-street driving while providing better overall support. More importantly, selecting the Recaros forces you to give up Ford's excellent seat heaters and coolers." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "Up front, room is decent for driver and passenger. The front seats are comfortable." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2019 Mustang include the SYNC infotainment interface, a 4.2-inch infotainment display, two USB ports, six speakers, a rearview camera, and a proximity key with push-button start. Upgraded options include the SYNC 3 infotainment system, an 8-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a nine-speaker sound system, satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hot spot, dual-zone automatic climate control, ambient lighting, pony projection lamps, a Shaker 12-speaker audio system, and a voice-activated navigation system. Available driver assistance features include adaptive cruise control, forward collision alert with brake support, pre-collision assist with pedestrian detection and active braking, automatic high beams, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane keep assist, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

The Mustang comes with straightforward technology that looks sharp and is easy to use. The base SYNC interface is decent, but the upgraded SYNC 3 system is much better, primarily because of its large screen and ability to connect many apps with your smartphone.

  • "Muscle cars don't exactly scream 'high tech,' but the Mustang gets high marks for the availability of newer features. On top of that, these features are intuitive and easy to use. The optional digital instrument panel not only looks cool, but it is also functional and a great secondary control screen." -- Edmunds
  • "Inside, a few of the test cars, both GTs and EcoBoosts, had the new 12-inch, fully digital gauge cluster. It looks phenomenal, offering up different layouts with each mode. You can also override the layout presets and choose your own. Ford did a great job keeping things simple and legible in normal mode with a classic dual-gauge layout, and increasing the simplicity and legibility as the modes ratchet up in intensity." -- Autoblog (2018)
  • "The rest of the dashboard tech is unchanged for 2018, with the same great Sync 3 infotainment as before. Graphics and maps are crisply rendered and menus are easy to navigate. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are still standard and supplemented by native Sync AppLink apps like Pandora, Glympse, Spotify and Domino's Pizza. (Yep, pizza.)" -- CNET (2018)

Sports cars aren't known for having lots of trunk space, but the Mustang Fastback is an exception. Its 13.5-cubic-foot trunk is one of the largest in the class and similar to what many compact sedans offer. Trunk size drops to 11.4 cubic feet (which is still above average) in convertible models.

  • "The Mustang has a sizable lead in regard to cargo capacity over the Camaro, but the Challenger still has the biggest. The 13.5-cubic-foot trunk's opening is wide and has a relatively low liftover height. Two golf bags can fit across the back, but not if you opt for the Shaker audio." -- Edmunds
  • "The Ford Mustang's trunk is bigger than you might expect -- 13.5 cubic feet in coupes, 11.4 in convertibles -- and the rear seats fold flat to accommodate longer items." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
  • "Interior storage is adequate, but no more. The glovebox is arranged so that the owner's manual is out of the way, leaving a fair amount of space for stuff." -- Consumer Guide (2015)
