2016 Ford Mustang Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2016 Ford Mustang was new.

Scorecard

Interior: 8.0

The 2016 Ford Mustang's interior has a mix of classic and contemporary styling, according to critics. The Mustang also has nicer materials than you would expect in a muscle car, auto writers say, especially in the Premium trims. According to test drivers, the Mustang's front seats are comfortable. Critics say the Mustang's rear seats are cramped. Trunk space in both the coupe and the convertible is good for a sports car. The Mustang has a new, optional touch-screen infotainment system called SYNC 3, and reviewers note that it's easier to use than the old MyFord Touch system.

  • "While all 2016 Mustang models get a coolly retro-yet-modern interior style, Premium Mustang models justify their added cost with better materials and features." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Inside, the materials are a step above the muscle-car stereotype, while flourishes like metal-look toggle switches and aluminum dash inserts manage to dress up the place without seeming kitschy." -- Edmunds
  • "What about the interior? It's a major improvement - the variety of lines and materials alone makes for nicer viewing, on top of which it is put together with more care and luxury touches like the available blind spot warning in the (tiny) mirrors, rearview camera with a bright, crisp image and adaptive cruise control are tastes of the good life." -- Autoblog (2015)

Seating

Most 2016 Ford Mustangs seat four, except for the new Shelby GT350R, which seats two. Cloth upholstery is standard. Leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, heated and cooled front seats and Recaro sport seats are available.

Critics agree that the Ford Mustang has comfortable front seats. The Mustang's rear seats are too cramped for adults to sit comfortably, according to reviewers. Test drivers say the Mustang provides a better view of the road than the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger, but they note that rearward visibility still isn't great.

  • "Although we didn't get to test a base model (none were made available at the preview), both the EcoBoost and GT versions driven had unusually comfortable front seats, though only the driver's had adjustable lumbar support." -- Consumer Guide (2015)
  • The back seats remain strictly for kids, which is a bit disappointing given the Mustang's 188.3-inch total length-within an inch of a Toyota Camry." -- Car and Driver (2015)
  • Visibility is reasonably good, certainly better than a Camaro or Challenger, though the thick C-pillars block everything over your shoulders." -- Edmunds (2015)

Interior Features

The 2016 Mustang comes standard with a rearview camera, proximity key, Bluetooth, two USB ports, Ford's SYNC voice-controlled infotainment interface and a feature that allows you to record lap times and other performance data. The Mustang is also available with MyKey, which lets you set speed and audio volume limits. Available features include rear parking sensors, navigation, rain-sensing wipers, remote start, dual-zone automatic climate control, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring, cross traffic alert, a 12-speaker Shaker audio system and Ford's new SYNC 3 touch-screen infotainment system, which recognizes multi-touch gestures like a smartphone. The convertible comes with a power-opening-and-closing soft top with a manual latch.

Reviewers are impressed with the number of standard and optional features in the 2016 Ford Mustang. They say the standard voice-activated SYNC system makes it easy to place phone calls and change stereo settings, and the new, optional SYNC 3 touch-screen infotainment system has an easier-to-use interface than the old MyFord Touch system in the 2015 Mustang.

  • "The 2016 Ford Mustang's interior pays homage to Mustangs past with retro touches like a dual-cowl dashboard, but it also offers nearly all of the latest conveniences. Even the base Mustang comes standard with unexpected niceties like keyless entry and ignition, a rearview camera (a relief given the car's poor rear visibility) and Track Apps (for measuring lap times and such). Also standard is the Sync voice command system, which greatly simplifies the operation of audio and phone functions. The available Sync 3 touchscreen infotainment system is new to the market, but it shows promise relative to its controversial MyFord Touch predecessor, providing a simplified interface with smartphone-style pinching and swiping gestures." -- Edmunds
  • "Modern cars are about having it all, and anyone buying a new Mustang will find a classic pony car built with all the latest safety systems. Whether it's blind-spot monitoring or forward-collision alert, it's as modern as you'd want." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "You can sense the Mustang traces in the layout, but controls and screens feel modernized -- amusingly, the speedometer is labeled Ground Speed." -- Motor Trend (2015)

Cargo

The 2016 Mustang coupe (fastback) has 13.5 cubic feet of trunk space, which is more than most sports coupes offer. Convertible models offer a generous 11.4 cubic feet of trunk space. Fastback models come standard with a 50/50 split-folding rear seat.

Auto writers are pleased with the amount of trunk space in the Mustang, but some note that cabin space for smaller items is limited.

  • "On the other hand, the trunk is bigger than you might expect - 13.5 cubic feet in coupes, 11.4 in convertibles - and the rear seats fold flat to accommodate longer items." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The Mustang coupe's trunk provides 13.5 cubic feet of cargo space -- fairly generous for a sport coupe -- while the convertible offers 11.4 cubes." -- Edmunds
  • Interior storage is adequate, but no more. The glovebox is arranged so that the owner's manual is out of the way, leaving a fair amount of space for stuff." -- Consumer Guide (2015)
