2018 Ford Fusion Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 8.2

The 2018 Ford Fusion features an upscale design and high-quality materials, particularly in upper trims. However, some hard plastics are present in other models. There is plenty of passenger and cargo space, and the car's tech features are easy to use.

  • "The 2018 Fusion would also be lost in this class if it weren't for its high-quality interior and abundant available safety equipment. Available items such as adaptive cruise control, an automated parking system and forward collision mitigation should definitely appeal to the safety-conscious, while Sync 3's excellent controls should satisfy the tech crowd." -- Edmunds
  • "Although high-quality materials are used throughout most of the Fusion's cabin, some of the plastic trim pieces are cheap and flimsy. Some of the low-grade bits are mixed in with the soft-touch plastic, detracting from an otherwise well-built interior." -- Motor Trend (2017)
  • "Platinum models get lots of extra leather, with an antiqued Cocoa finish on the dashboard and a quilted pattern on the seats. Door panels feature both treatments for an upscale look the moment you prepare to enter the cabin. Matte finish wood trim and extra aluminum detailing also help to set the Platinum model apart." -- New York Daily News (2017)

Seating

The Ford Fusion seats five on standard cloth seats with a six-way manually adjustable driver's seat and four-way manually adjustable passenger seat. Seating upgrades include leather seats, front sport seats, heated front seats, ventilated front seats, a 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat, a six- or 10-way power-adjustable passenger seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a heated steering wheel.

The Fusion offers good seating accommodations with comfortable and supportive front seats. However, some might find the optional leather a bit stiff. Rear-seat space is ample, with decent leg- and headroom.

For connecting car seats, the Fusion has two complete LATCH systems in the second row, and the middle seat position can borrow lower anchors from either side. The lower anchors are located deep in the seat, and it's difficult to maneuver your hands around them to attach car seat straps.

  • "The standard cloth seats are nicely padded and offer a great balance of support and comfort that lasts for hours. But we found it harder to be comfortable in the optional leather seats, which feel taut and stiffer. … Almost everyone should find the Fusion's interior pleasant and accommodating. It's easy to get in and out of, the driving position is nicely adjustable, and the cabin offers a good amount of space. Tall passengers might take issue with the sloping rear roofline when getting into the backseat." -- Edmunds
  • "Slip into a Ford Fusion, especially the top-of-the-line Platinum model with its piped and quilted premium leather and both seat heating and ventilation, and you will find that comfort is easy to come by. The car coddles its driver, the steering wheel is a pleasure to grip, and nothing more than a rather low roof and slightly thick windshield pillars presents cause for complaint. … If you're a passenger, know that the rakish Fusion supplies comfortable rear seats, too. Legroom and foot space are decent, the bottom seat cushion delivers excellent thigh support, and the front seat backs are covered in a soft, plush material. The rear seat back does, however, recline to too great a degree. This, in turn, forces a somewhat slouched seating position." -- New York Daily News (2017)
  • "The [back-seat] cushions are chairlike, you can slide big feet past the rear of the center console, and the center seating position is useful for actual adults." -- Car and Driver (2017)

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2018 Ford Fusion include push-button start, Ford MyKey, a rearview camera, a four-speaker stereo system, and the voice-activated SYNC interface. Optional features include dual-zone automatic climate control, a six-speaker audio system, an 11-speaker premium audio system, a 12-speaker Sony premium sound system, satellite radio, HD Radio, a 4.2-inch instrument cluster display, proximity key entry, the SYNC 3 infotainment system, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, remote start, a 110-volt power outlet, a moonroof, voice-activated navigation, rear parking sensors, rain sensing windshield wipers, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane keep assist, automatic parking assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and a pre-collision system with forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, and automatic emergency braking.

The optional SYNC 3 touch-screen infotainment system functions smoothly and is easy to operate. Graphics are clear and easy to read, and the system recognizes gestures like swiping and pinching to zoom. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay allow for smartphone integration. Other physical buttons and controls are intuitively laid out.

  • "… most cabin controls are nicely grouped and easy to operate at a glance, though a few of the buttons are on the small side. Steering wheel buttons make it easy to sort through the comprehensive dashboard screen. … With the new Sync 3 infotainment system and the advent of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the Ford Fusion is one of the more approachable and tech-friendly vehicles on the market. It's easy to connect devices, execute voice commands or navigate to a destination without a steep learning curve." -- Edmunds
  • "When you do interact with Sync 3, you'll immediately notice that the interface is responsive, quick, and user-friendly. Voice commands, like in Android Auto, are easy, and although it does require you to say particular phrases, they're not super specific ones; telling it to call someone, change the climate settings, or play a specific song is just as simple. Those who don't like using voice command will also have user-friendly controls, and the Fusion's 8.0-inch touchscreen has a simple layout and quick and responsive controls. The screen has clear graphics, pinch-to-zoom function, and swiping capability. Two 4.2-inch displays flank the central speedometer, and you can configure them individually to show, among other things, your trip computer, radio, and vehicle diagnostics to complement the main touchscreen." -- Motor Trend (2017)
  • "In the past, Ford has received criticism for its Sync connectivity. Yet with every generation, the system improves. The Fusion uses the newest version, Sync 3, with a highly intuitive layout and a clear, easy-to-read screen. Sync 3 also allows you to use Siri Eyes Free to safely control your phone while you drive." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)

Cargo

The 2018 Ford Fusion has 16 cubic feet of cargo space, which is great for the class. A standard 60/40 split-folding rear seat increases utility. The trunk's opening is wide and has a low floor.

  • "A wide trunk opening with a low liftover height and standard 60/40-split folding rear seats give you easy access to the Fusion's very large trunk. With 16 cubic feet of volume in the trunk alone, the Fusion has more cargo space than the Accord, Camry, Malibu and Mazda 6." -- Edmunds
  • "For those obsessed with cubby spaces and cargo space, the Fusion has lots of them along with a massive glove box. Trunk space is also … generous at 16 cubic feet, and in case that's not enough, the Fusion also comes standard with 60/40 split-folding rear seats for extra cargo capacity." -- Motor Trend (2017)
  • "… its big trunk holds more than a Honda Accord's. Hybrid models have a smaller trunk owing to the battery, but even they have a pass-through to the rear seats for longer items." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
