2018 Ford Fusion Hybrid Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 8.0

The 2018 Ford Fusion Hybrid has a stylish design full of top-notch materials, and it's available with high-quality quilted leather seats. The cabin is spacious, and the infotainment system is easy to use. Cargo space is small for a midsize car.

  • "With quilted leather seat upholstery, leather dashboard coverings and a sea of stitching throughout, the Fusion Hybrid Platinum's interior is jaw-dropping and nearly perfect. Rivals pale in comparison." -- Edmunds
  • "The new top-dog Platinum trim comes with the softest leather you can get in a Fusion. Although this leather looks to be a dead ringer for the Bridge of Weir skins seen in the Lincoln MKZ, Ford-brand marketeers call it Venetian leather. This glove-soft upholstery covers the instrument panel, the heated and cooled seats, the steering wheel, and the armrests. A quilted pattern, similar to what you see in some Audis, is found on the doors and the seats." -- Car and Driver (2017)
  • "Inside, flowing lines and contoured shapes displace the straight-edged design of the old car. Soft-touch surfaces abound, and the interior is also quieter than before thanks to acoustic underbody shields that also contribute to the Fusion's efficiency-boosting 0.27 coefficient of drag." -- Left Lane News (2017)

Seating

The Fusion Hybrid seats five on standard cloth upholstery. Leather upholstery, front sport seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a heated steering wheel, and heated front seats are available. The front and rear seats are comfortable and supportive with plenty of legroom. Headroom is good up front, but the sloping roof may cut into taller passenger's headroom in the back. The roofline also cuts into rearward visibility.

  • Almost everyone should find the Fusion's interior pleasant and accommodating. It's easy to get in and out of, the driving position is highly adjustable, and the cabin offers a generous amount of space. Tall passengers might take issue with the sloping rear roofline when getting into the backseat." -- Edmunds
  • "Slip into a Ford Fusion, especially the top-of-the-line Platinum model with its piped and quilted premium leather and both seat heating and ventilation, and you will find that comfort is easy to come by. The car coddles its driver, the steering wheel is a pleasure to grip, and nothing more than a rather low roof and slightly thick windshield pillars presents cause for complaint." -- New York Daily News (2017)
  • "The new Platinum I drove is now the top trim level and offers many luxury features, including quilted leather seats (which are very, very comfortable) and heating and cooling functions for the front seats." -- Cars.com (2017)

Interior Features

The 2018 Ford Fusion Hybrid comes standard with a nine-speaker sound system, push-button start, a rearview camera, and the voice-controlled SYNC infotainment system with a 4.2-inch display. This system lets you make phone calls and play music using voice commands. Also standard is Ford's MyKey, which lets you set speed and volume limits for secondary drivers. Available features include remote start, a moonroof, adaptive cruise control, pre-collision assist with pedestrian detection, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, parallel park assist, rear park assist, voice-activated navigation, predictive weather and traffic, and the SYNC 3 infotainment system with an 8-inch touch screen. This upgraded system has two USB ports and more advanced smartphone integration capabilities like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The touch screen is responsive with clear graphics. Menus are intuitive, and the available navigation responds to swipe and pinch-to-zoom commands. There are physical knobs and buttons to control climate and radio functions.

  • "Sync 3 and its onboard navigation are much better than the old MyFord Touch system. Like a smartphone, Sync 3 has big virtual buttons and the ability to swipe through menus." -- Edmunds
  • "Highlights of Sync 3 include faster response to user input, improved graphics, more conversational voice recognition, and a capacitive touch display supporting swipe and pinch-to-zoom functions similar to a tablet computer. Additionally, a new Sync Connect app allows for remote engine starting, remote access to door locks, and more, all from your smartphone's screen." -- New York Daily News (2017)
  • "Feeding media to the stereo and providing infotainment services along the way is the new Ford Sync 3 infotainment system, which we've seen proliferating throughout Ford's lineup of vehicles. Not only has Sync 3 tremendously improved over the previous generation, it's also a marked improvement over much of the competition. The graphics are crisply rendered and the functions are smartly organized, which makes the system a joy to use." -- CNET (2017)

Cargo

Because the hybrid's battery intrudes on trunk space, the Fusion Hybrid has only 12 cubic feet of space in its trunk, which is small for a midsize car. Folding rear seats help increase space and cargo-carrying versatility.

  • The Fusion Hybrid offers 12 cubic feet of trunk space, which is sufficient but less than some hybrid competitors. But the Fusion does have rear seats that can be folded down to increase cargo capacity. Most other hybrid sedans don't have this feature." -- Edmunds
  • "Anyone can appreciate the Fusion Hybrid's trunk, as the battery takes up less space than hybrids from other carmakers, and the rear backrest folds down to increase cargo utility." -- Automobile Magazine (2017)
  • The trunk swallows more cargo than a Honda Accord can, but the battery pack on hybrid and especially plug-in hybrid models compromises luggage space. This family sedan's rear seats fold to expand cargo space, even in Hybrid models, but there's no seatback release in the trunk." -- Kelley Blue Book (2016)
