2018 Ford Fusion Energi Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.6

The 2018 Ford Fusion Energi is made with mostly high-quality materials, and the top Platinum trim features extra luxury trimmings. Overall, leg- and headroom is generous and the seats are comfortable. The SYNC 3 infotainment system is easy to use, but the Fusion Energi lacks sufficient cargo space.

  • Build quality stands pat at the basic Fusion level. It's nice, though the significant extra cost of the Energi is mostly in the plug-in hybrid system. You won't see extra worth in the materials or fit and finish." -- Edmunds
  • "Materials quality is good throughout, and the elimination of the old Ford touch-sensitive controls in favor of real knobs and buttons is something I still find worthy of praise." -- Cars.com (2017)
  • "The dashboard and controls have an impressive sleekness. This is a technologically advanced vehicle with a cabin to match." -- Autotrader (2016)

Seating

The Fusion Energi seats five on standard leather upholstery. Other standard features include heated front seats and a 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat. A heated steering wheel is available.

There is generally good head- and legroom all-around in the Fusion Energi. However, taller passengers may find that the sloping roofline intrudes on their head space in the rear seats. Additionally, some front-seat passengers may find the front seats too narrow.

For installing child safety seats, there are two sets of lower LATCH anchors in the rear outboard seats and three top tethers.

  • "There's plenty of legroom and shoulder room all around. There's lots of front headroom, but the sloping roof is somewhat low for tall folks and those with big hair." -- Edmunds
  • The front seats are sufficiently adjustable to any body type or configuration, but the rear seats still suffer from cramped conditions. Legroom doesn't feel as copious as in some other mid-size sedans (the Sonata has tons), and the low roofline makes getting into and out of the backseat a yoga session." -- Cars.com (2017)
  • Rear passengers are unlikely to complain. Despite the fastback roofline, there's still enough headroom for 6-footers. Legroom is also generous." -- Autotrader (2016)

Interior Features

The 2018 Ford Fusion Energi comes standard with a rearview camera, rear park assist, MyKey, (which lets you set volume and speed limits for secondary drivers), an 11-speaker sound system, satellite radio, remote start, push-button start, and the SYNC 3 infotainment system, which includes an 8-inch touch screen, two USB ports, and smartphone integration systems like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The standard AppLink system lets you use your voice to access apps on your phone.

Available features include voice-activated navigation, a moonroof, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, pre-collision assist with pedestrian detection, blind spot monitoring, and parallel and perpendicular park assist.

The SYNC 3 system is easy to use. It reacts quickly to inputs, and the available navigation responds to smartphonelike gestures, such as swiping and pinch-to-zoom. It is also easy to connect your smartphone to the system and access your favorite apps on the go.

  • "As always, Ford's voice controls, now via Sync 3, are excellent. Natural language and simple commands do wonders to play music, change radio stations, input navigation destinations or place calls. And you have the option to hold the voice button longer to access Siri on your paired smartphone." -- Edmunds
  • "One area that's received a massive upgrade is Ford's multimedia system, now called Sync 3. The new format for the touchscreen is a combination of the old Ford Sync and a strip of icons on the bottom of the screen, similar to FCA's Uconnect. The screen is now divided into three regions instead of the more cluttered quadrants of the old system. It's fast, clear, easy to use and has graphics that are a lot more user-friendly than any of Ford's previous systems – or even many competing automakers' systems. Connecting personal electronic devices is a breeze, voice commands worked far more often than not, and the entire system felt up-to-date and functional. Kudos to Ford for finally getting it right." -- Cars.com (2017)
  • "Ford is pushing its Sync 3 infotainment system as significantly improved and more phone-like than before. And it is all those things." -- Autoblog (2017)

Cargo

The Fusion Energi has 8.2 cubic feet of trunk space. This is below average for both the midsize car class and for hybrids. The placement of the car's battery cuts into trunk space and creates an awkward shelf that makes loading the small trunk difficult.

  • "The Energi's large battery pack takes a toll on trunk space, reducing the cargo area from 16 cubic feet in the standard sedan (and 12 cubic feet in the Hybrid) to just 8.2 cubes. It doesn't help that the giant shelf it creates makes the cargo area oddly shaped. It proves too small for most shopping." -- Edmunds
  • "Hope you really like the Fusion Energi's styling, because that 8.2 cubic feet falls below the 2016 Hyundai Sonata Plug-In's 9.9, the 2016 Volt's 10.6, and the 2015 Prius Plug-In's 21.6. Toyota says the 2017 Prius Prime has more cargo space than that model." -- Motor Trend (2017)
  • "The biggest problem with turning an existing hybrid into a plug-in hybrid is where to put the extra batteries. In normal hybrids, batteries usually fit under the seats, but when you increase the size of them severalfold, they have to be placed somewhere else. That usually means eating up space in the trunk, and that's the case in the Energi." -- Cars.com (2017)
