2016 Ford Focus Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2016 Ford Focus was new.

Scorecard

Interior: 7.8

Inside, the 2016 Ford Focus has first-rate cabin materials and is attractively styled, reviewers agree. They think its front seats have good support, but the back seats are cramped for the class. For 2016, the Focus can be equipped with a new SYNC 3 infotainment system, which replaces the much-criticized MyFord Touch infotainment system. Reviewers say SYNC 3 is faster and more user-friendly than the outgoing system. With the Focus sedan, trunk space is typical for the class, and the hatchback model's cargo space is decently sized compared with that of other hatchbacks.

  • "The 2016 Focus has a handsome, high-quality interior that can be fitted with impressive technology features." -- Edmunds
  • "The Old World influence is clearly evident in the Focus' classy cabin, which charms with high-quality materials and a distinctive design." -- Left Lane News (2015)
  • With additional sound deadening, the 2015 Focus should also be quieter. The overall pros and cons remain. With expensive-feeling materials, the Focus boasts the look of a more expensive car, but it's not the roomiest in its class." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)

Seating

The 2016 Focus has seats for five and is available with leather upholstery, heated front seats and a power-adjustable driver’s seat. Test drivers report that the Focus' front seats are roomy and supportive, but some say the back seats have less legroom than competitors.

  • Up front, the seats offer good support and comfort even on long drives. In back, though, the limited legroom doesn't measure up to many competing models." -- Edmunds
  • "Material choice and observed fit-and-finish on these early-run cars was very good, as was seat comfort." -- Autoblog (2015)
  • There's sufficient space up front, but the rear seats are lacking in legroom compared to some competitors." -- Left Lane News (2015)

Interior Features

The 2016 Ford Focus comes standard with a rearview camera, Ford's SYNC voice-control system, a USB port and Bluetooth. Blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, navigation, dual-zone automatic climate control and the new SYNC 3 infotainment system with an 8-inch touch screen are optional.

Reviewers agree that the Focus' new SYNC 3 system has a user-friendly interface that can be operated using the same swipe and pinch gestures used on many smartphones. They also say that SYNC 3 is responsive to commands.

  • "Controls are generally straightforward and easy to use, including the newly available Sync 3 touchscreen interface. Replacing the much-maligned MyFord Touch system for 2016, Sync 3 features a revamped menu system and recognizes smartphone-like gestures like swipe and pinch-to-zoom." -- Edmunds
  • The RS will also have the latest version of the company's SYNC infotainment system. It's much better than the outgoing one. Where that previous system was marred by too-small alphanumerics and latent response, Sync 3 and its 6.5-inch touch screen are faster and easier to operate." -- Kelley Blue Book

Cargo

The 2016 Focus sedan has 13.2 cubic feet of trunk space, which is on par with that of most cars in the class. The Focus hatchback offers 23.3 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 43.9 cubic feet with the rear seats folded, which is good for the class. The ST has slightly more cargo space behind the rear seats (23.8 cubic feet), while the new RS has slightly less (19.9 cubic feet). The Focus Electric's battery reduces cargo space to 14.2 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 33.2 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

Test drivers are impressed with the Focus hatchback's cargo space. Some note that the 60/40 split-folding rear seatbacks make it easy to store long items, and a few appreciate that the Focus has a storage space with a USB port in front of the shifter, making it a convenient spot for storing items like a cell phone.

  • "When it comes to cargo space, the sedan's trunk can hold 13.2 cubic feet, and the 60/40-split rear seatbacks are great for squeezing in longer items. The hatchback model, meanwhile, offers a generous 23.8 cubic feet behind the rear seats, expanding to 44.8 cubic feet with those seatbacks folded down." -- Edmunds
  • The 2015 Ford Focus comes with a host of interior upgrades to enhance usability. For example, there's now a small cubby and USB port ahead of the shifter, perfect for your phone." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
