2014 Ford Focus Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2014 Ford Focus was new.

Interior: 7.7

Auto writers say that the 2014 Ford Focus has one of the nicest interiors available in an affordable small car. They note that the cabin has a clean, eye-catching design, and that soft-touch materials enhance its premium feel.

  • "While the handsome exteriors of this sedan and hatchback might hook you initially, it's the upscale cabin that will reel you into the Focus fold. The interior is attractive and quiet, and the materials are among the best in this class." -- Edmunds
  • "While not the roomiest in its class, the cabin on the Focus boasts the look and feel of a more expensive car, reinforcing that premium character with loads of soft-touch surfaces and an abundance of sound-attenuation materials." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Focus has an attractive interior, and its materials are a combination of lightly-padded and hard plastics." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
  • "It looks far more expensive than most of its classmates, both inside and out, with a well-designed, clean center stack. The bulk of buttons, especially on higher trim levels, has migrated to either a touch-screen or the steering wheel." -- Automobile Magazine (2012)

The Focus seats five and comes with cloth upholstery. Leather upholstery, heated front seats and a power-adjustable driver’s seat are available. Focus ST models are available with partial-leather or heated, full-leather Recaro front seats. Test drivers say that the Focus offers comfortable front seats that are well-bolstered, but also wide enough to accommodate larger occupants. While one reviewer writes that the back seat is spacious enough for average-sized adults, another notes that small cars like the Honda Civic and Volkswagen Jetta offer more back-seat legroom.

  • "The front seats are supportive and comfortable over long distances. The rear seats offer adequate headroom, but come up a little short on legroom compared to the accommodations in the Honda Civic and Volkswagen Jetta." -- Edmunds
  • "The rear seat is scaled for two mid-sized adults but decently padded for three kids." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Even large drivers should be comfortable in front. A tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel and height-adjustable driver's seat help dial in a suitable position. The seats are bolstered enough to keep drivers planted in turns, but not so confining as to be uncomfortable for larger folks." -- Consumer Guide (2013)

Interior Features

The 2014 Ford Focus comes standard with keyless entry, power front windows and a four-speaker stereo with a CD player and an auxiliary input jack. Options and features on higher trims include power rear windows, Ford’s Sync system, which includes Bluetooth phone and audio streaming and a USB port, satellite radio, rear parking sensors, a backup camera and push-button start with keyless access. MyFord Touch is also available, and includes a Sony 10-speaker stereo system, dual-zone automatic climate control and an 8-inch touch-screen display. Navigation is also available with MyFord Touch.

The Focus wins points for its clear gauges, as well as its controls, which are easy for the driver to reach. Some reviewers say that while the available Sync and MyFord Touch systems take some time to master, they’re still highly-functional systems that become easier to use after some practice. Still, one test driver notes that MyFord Touch’s on-screen controls could be more user-friendly.

  • "It doesn't get much better with the optional MyFord Touch system, either. The large touchscreen (combined with the truly useful Sync voice command system) looks classy and provides some neat customization possibilities. But in real-world operation, we've found that the virtual buttons are difficult to identify at a glance, and too often get pressed accidentally or fail to respond properly." -- Edmunds
  • "Legible instrumentation and well-positioned controls in all versions are complemented by an 8.0-inch full-color touch-screen that replaces the normal multifunction display on Titanium models with the MyFord Touch infotainment and navigation system." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Some Luddites have problems working the touch screen or steering wheel buttons, but I find the system easy to understand and can operate without taking my eyes off the road. MyFord Touch is so much more advanced than any other system that it can be confusing at first, and conventional wisdom may frown upon it. Yes, it's different, but you don't have to be a hater; just learn how to use it. It's easier than an iPhone." -- The Detroit News (2012)
  • "Ford's SYNC display dominates the plastic-trimmed center stack, and while it takes a little practice to get the basic navigation mastered, it does offer plenty of function." -- Motor Trend (2012)

The Focus sedan has 13.2 cubic feet of trunk space. The Focus hatchback offers 23.8 cubic feet of space, which expands to 44.8 cubic feet with the second row folded. Hatchbacks like the Honda Fit and Volkswagen Golf offer slightly more cargo space overall, though one reviewer notes that the Focus sedan has a typical amount of room for the class. One test driver writes that the Focus’ cabin could use more storage spaces for small items.

  • "The sedan's 13.2-cubic-foot trunk is on par for this class, but the hatchback model is still the better choice for the practical-minded. The latter provides 23.8 cubic feet of space with the 60/40-split rear seats up and 44.8 cubic feet with them folded down." -- Edmunds
  • "The interior's small-item storage is pretty average and includes a small cubby behind the shifter, console bin, two cup holders, and door pockets." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
  • "The main complaint for both College and Family Sara is the interior's lack of storage spaces. This is a hazard of a smaller car; in the front row I just had two cupholders, the center console and a glove box. I missed having a little bin for my phone or my wallet." -- Cars.com (2012)
