2013 Ford Flex Review

Reviewers praised the 2013 Ford Flex for its adult-friendly third row and blazing acceleration with the available turbocharged engine, though its infotainment system can be hard to master.

Pros & Cons

  • Quick acceleration with turbocharged V6
  • Adult-friendly third row
  • Learning curve with MyFord Touch infotainment system
  • Limited cargo space

2013 Ford Flex Overview

The 2013 Flex has a standard V6 engine that reviewers said provides sufficient power. Many added that the available turbocharged V6 makes the Flex incredibly fast. A six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard. All-wheel drive is available and is the only drive type available on models with the turbocharged engine. Fuel economy for the 2013 Flex tops out at 18/25 mpg city/highway with front-wheel drive, which is typical for the class. Test drivers wrote that the Ford Flex has a soft ride over rough roads and composed handling. Some added that its brakes feel strong and its steering offers good feedback.

According to auto journalists, the 2013 Ford Flex has a quiet cabin that is constructed with materials that are soft to the touch. Reviewers wrote that the Flex's cabin and seating are spacious, and some added that adults can comfortably fit in the third row, which isn't always the case with three-row midsize SUVs. There is up to 83.2 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear rows folded, which is on the lower end of the class. Rear parking sensors and Ford's SYNC system with a USB port and Bluetooth are standard. Available features include the MyFord Touch infotainment system, leather seats, navigation, blind spot monitoring, a 12-speaker Sony audio system, heated and ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, a rearview camera and adaptive cruise control. Some automotive critics found that, with some study, the SYNC system works fine, while others said its operation could be easier.

Other SUVs to Consider

Like the Flex, the 2013 Chevrolet Traverse has a third row that reviewers considered to be adult-friendly, but it offers quite a bit more overall cargo space than the Flex. Test drivers said the Traverse has a composed ride and that it is easy to maneuver in tight spaces.

According to reviewers, the 2013 Mazda CX-9 is one of the sportiest SUVs in the class, with responsive steering and sharp handling. The CX-9 also offers more cargo space than the Flex, and reviewers liked its attractive cabin design.
