2014 Ford F-150 Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2014 Ford F-150 was new.

Interior: 8.6

Test drivers write that the 2014 Ford F-150's cabin has a somewhat industrial, blocky look. They agree that the base trims are fairly plain but upper trims are more attractive, and note that the F-150's cabin is very quiet. Still, a few critics mention that some of the plastic trim looks too grainy and feels too hard for the more expensive trims.

  • "We tested a number of trims and found all delivered a fairly calm driving experience, with little harshness and an impressively quiet cabin." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "As for this Limited trim, the exterior looks great and the interior is stellar. The cabin is spacious and comfortable for an overall feel that's best described as practical luxury." -- AutoWeek (2013)
  • "Lower-line models are fairly stark inside, as you would expect from work-oriented trucks. The ambiance improves markedly as you move up to higher trim levels." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
  • "Blocky and chunky in a decidedly truck-like way, the F-150's cabin is convenient and comfortable if a bit industrial feeling compared to the Ram's more luxurious confines. By that, we're delicately saying that the F-150's plethora of hard, overly-grained plastic trim would be better suited to a work truck than a $50,000 ‘lifestyle’ vehicle." -- Left Lane News (2013)

The Regular cab F-150 seats up to three people, while SuperCab and SuperCrew cabs have seating for up to six. Vinyl upholstery is standard on the base XL trim, while upper trims come with either cloth or leather seats. Front bucket seats, power-adjustable, heated and cooled front seats and heated rear seats are optional. Reviewers say the front seats are very comfortable and supportive and that the driver seat offers a great range of adjustment for tall and short drivers. Test drivers write that outward visibility is good, but recommend opting for the optional backup camera for improved rearward visibility. They say the back seats of SuperCab models offer adequate space for adults for short trips, but some say the rear-hinged doors make it more of a hassle to get into the back seats. Test drivers agree that the SuperCrew offers generous rear legroom for passengers.

  • "As for overall comfort, we think the F-150's contoured front seats are among the most comfortable in the class." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "If we found one comfortable driving position, we found a half-dozen. If Shaquille O'Neal and Muggsy Bogues were forced to select and share a single vehicle for the rest of their lives due to some obscure NBA pension bylaw, this would be the one." -- Car and Driver (2013)
  • "Plenty of room on comfortable, supportive seats. Step-in is very high, especially on 4WD models. We would highly recommend the available running boards. Visibility is generally good, but you'll want to double check your surroundings anyway. The available rearview camera is a must-have." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
  • "The 2013 Ford F-150 SuperCrew is nearly as spacious for cargo and passengers as the cavernous Toyota CrewMax. It offers superb backseat comfort thanks to abundant legroom, a flat floor and a seatback angle that's pleasantly reclined. The SuperCab is still fairly roomy, but legroom is noticeably less generous and opening its rear-hinged clamshell doors is a hassle compared to the traditional front-hinged ones found in the Ram and Tundra's cab-and-a-halfs." -- Edmunds (2013)
  • "Generally, there's much to like about the firmly padded and remarkably bolstered front seats. Even the rear seat, accessible by the suicide-style rear-hinged doors, is comfortable enough for short stints." -- Left Lane News (2013)

Interior Features

The 2014 Ford F-150 XL comes standard with an AM/FM stereo and air conditioning. Features available as options or on upper trims include cruise control, power windows, locks and mirrors, Ford's voice-activated SYNC system, which includes Bluetooth and a USB port, the MyFord Touch infotainment system with an 8-inch screen, a power moonroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, a backup camera, a 10-speaker Sony stereo system, satellite radio, navigation and rear parking sensors.

Reviewers say that for the most part, stereo and climate adjustments are easy to make even while wearing gloves, and they note that most controls are easy to reach. Some auto journalists appreciate that the F-150's version of MyFord Touch features more redundant buttons than other models, which they say improve the functionality and response times of the system. However, others write that the F-150's version of MyFord Touch is still confusing and glitchy. Additionally, one test driver says that it is easy to pair a smartphone with the system.

  • "Knowing that the hands controlling the 2014 Ford F-150 will often be clad in some type of glove, be it work or ski, the design team has created buttons, knobs and switches that are slightly oversized, widely spaced and easy to reach." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Easy phone pairing. Simple calling. No complaints. And here's a cool thing I noticed: Even though the odometer is an LCD digital readout, the numbers roll over just like an old-school mechanical odometer. Nice." -- AutoWeek (2013)
  • "The F-150 gets new audio controls for 2013 to match the rest of Ford's newer cars, and the results aren't ideal. Certain buttons are harder to reach, and operation of the display screen can be confusing. Opting for MyFord Touch and its large touchscreen certainly makes things look higher tech and add functionality, but this system is prone to glitches and can be confusing to use." -- Edmunds (2013)
  • "A bigger screen sits in the center of the dash for the optionally-included MyFord Touch system. The same unit used in other Ford vehicles, it benefits here from additional buttons and knobs for audio volume, tuning and presets. On other Fords, these features are sometimes accessed only through the finicky touch screen. A major benefit to this is that the system didn't seem nearly as lag-prone here - due, no doubt, to the fact that we didn't have to press the touchscreen as often." -- Left Lane News (2013)

The 2014 Ford F-150 is available with a 5.5-foot, 6.5-foot or 8-foot bed, depending on the cab configuration. SuperCab and SuperCrew cabs come with split rear seats that flip up to allow for storage of bulkier items in the cab. Ford also offers an optional tailgate step to ease access to the cargo bed, and reviewers like the convenience that it adds. Others like the flat rear floor inside the SuperCrew, which makes it easy to load and store larger items. Reviewers say the center console is large and that overall small-item storage in the cab is good.

  • "Designed to deal with the awkward and potentially dangerous chore of getting into the pickup truck's bed, the integrated tailgate step on the 2014 Ford F-150 scores big. It deploys easily and even offers a convenient hand-hold." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "SuperCrew's rear-seat cushion folds up to create a flat floor. The grocery-bag hooks are a nice convenience. Cabin small-item storage is quite good, with the huge center console and a few small bins making up for a tiny glovebox. The cargo bed can be outfitted with dual side rails that can host adjustable tie-down cleats, removable bins, a bed divider, and a collapsible bed extender. A step retracts from below the rear bumper, easing access to the cargo bed. It's quite a handy feature." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
  • "Ford also offers a number of unique and useful perks, among these a flat rear floor, a deployable step that eases access to the cargo bed and Ford's Sync multimedia voice command system." -- Edmunds (2012)
