Buying Advice

Last Updated: February 21, 2019

Class-Leading Sales: The Ford Explorer was the best-selling midsize SUV in 2018. The Explorer outsold its nearest competitor, the Toyota Highlander, by about 7 percent last year. The trend of strong sales continued into this year, as sales have increased by 7.3 percent compared to this same period last year.

Above Average Prices: A base Explorer starts at $32,365, which is about $1,500 above the class average. Be careful when climbing trim levels, as a top tier model tips the scales at just over $54,000. The top trims for many of competitors in the segment start below $50,000.

Time to Buy: With the booming popularity of SUVs and crossovers, demand for the Explorer isn’t likely to decrease any time soon. If you’re set on the midsize Ford, check out this month’s Ford deals for all the best finance and lease offers. For a lower price, consider the Kia Sorento, the winner of our 2019 Best 3-Row SUV for the Money award, which starts $6,000 below the Explorer.
