2020 Ford Expedition Performance Review

Scorecard

Performance: 8.3

The 2020 Ford Expedition gets ample power from both of its turbocharged engines, and it has decent handling. Ride quality is generally smooth, though you'll feel the bumps when driving over rough pavement.

  • "The highest praise we can give the Expedition is that it drives smaller than it is. Which is amazing, because it's immense." -- Autoblog
  • "The Expedition feels almost sprightly as it leaves a stoplight or moves to merge on the highway, with responsive steering and firm brakes. Body roll is present, of course, but not to the extent you feel in a similarly sized Toyota Sequoia or Chevy Tahoe. Thank the Expedition’s independent rear suspension and adjustable shocks." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "For something this big and comfortable, it doesn't wallow and lean. Some credit goes to a suspension design that allows the two rear wheels to move up and down independently. The optional self-leveling rear suspension also helps with body control." -- Autotrader (2019)

Acceleration and Power

The Ford Expedition comes standard with a 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 engine that produces 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. Platinum models have the same engine, but it makes 400 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. A 10-speed automatic transmission is standard.

At the time of writing, fuel economy estimates are not available for the 2020 Expedition.

The Expedition has plenty of power and strong acceleration both from a stop and at speed. The automatic transmission delivers smooth and precise shifts.

  • "The turbocharged engine is also a real peach. There's torque everywhere, very little lag, and doesn't possess the uncouth truckish roar of its competitors' V8 engines. The 400-hp Platinum version is even stronger. In total, the Expedition's engine represents a key reason to consider it." -- Autoblog
  • "Happily, the EcoBoost V6 has more than enough muscle to move a full load of passengers and gear without issue." -- Autotrader (2019)
  • “The Expedition's powerful turbocharged V6 engine (375 horsepower, or 400 hp for the Platinum trim) also gives the SUV impressive gusto and makes it one of the quickest in the class. The 10-speed automatic transmission helps to make the most of this engine's power." -- Edmunds (2019)

Handling and Braking

The Expedition’s handling earns mixed reviews from critics, with some saying that it’s on the numb side with little feedback from the road and others commenting that it feels responsive. Additionally, it’s difficult to maneuver in tight spaces. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and four-wheel drive is optional. When properly equipped, the Expedition has decent off-road abilities.

  • The Expedition's size gives it a commanding view of the road. However, it also makes it cumbersome to navigate narrow city streets. We found ourselves parking further away from our destination in parking lots, or trying to park next to smaller vehicles. To be fair to the rest of the segment, anything this large is going to sacrifice maneuverability." -- Autoblog
  • "The steering response is slow, and feedback is numb. Although it tracks straight, the Expedition also has a lazy on-center feel. The steering wheel feels overly big and trucklike in your hands." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • Steering feel is heavy but not laborious. The ride is smooth and the cabin quiet, but catch a strong crosswind and the steering wheel will need a firm grasp, requiring the driver to make quick course corrections." -- Autotrader (2019)
