2019 Ford Expedition Interior Review

Interior: 8.7

The 2019 Expedition has a well-built cabin that blends durability with luxury. It borrows from the F-150’s trucklike personality, while also keeping the interior quality nice enough to be comparable to a base-model Lincoln. All three rows offer plenty of room for adults, and cargo space is impressive for the class, especially in the long-wheelbase Expedition Max. The available SYNC 3 infotainment system earns praise for its ease of use.

  • It may not be a luxury sedan, but the Expedition does a fair impression of one. Interior panels and parts were squeak-free on our test vehicle and exhibited excellent fit and finish. Leather quality erred on the side of durable versus supple. But given the application, we think it's the right move." -- Edmunds
  • "The luxury – specifically in the Platinum trimmed models – continues in the middle row, where the elegant leatherwork is still present, both in terms of the seats and the door trims." -- Motor Trend (2018)
  • Inside, as is traditional for the Expedition, its cabin borrows heavily from the F-150 parts bin, which suits the SUV's trucky personality. The use of two rotary knobs close together on the center console – one for the gear selector, the other for the drive modes – isn't an ideal setup, but there's nothing to complain about visually or functionally. … It may not offer the sumptuous luxury and craftsmanship of the Navigator Black Label, but overall materials quality is on par with the base level Navigators to our eyes." -- Automobile Magazine (2018)

The Expedition seats eight people in its standard configuration, or seven if you opt for the second-row bucket seats. Cloth upholstery, tilt-and-slide second-row seats, and power-folding third-row seats are standard. Options include leather upholstery and a heated steering wheel. The front seats can be optioned out with 10-way power adjustability, as well as heating, ventilating and massaging functions. You can also opt for heated second-row seats, and some models have a power-folding second row.

Both the Expedition and long-wheelbase Expedition Max have the same passenger space, and it’s plenty. Most adults can fit comfortably even in the third row, and the large doors allow for easy entry and exit. The tilting second-row seats makes it easy to access the third row, which isn’t always the case in three-row SUVs.

The Expedition has five complete sets of LATCH connectors for securing child car seats, as well as an additional upper tether anchor for the third-row middle seat. Models with second-row captain’s chairs have a total of four complete sets.

  • "A vehicle this big should have acres of room, and the Expedition does not disappoint. Every row can seat adults with plenty of room. Even the third row, which is usually a penalty box in most SUVs, is decent enough to seat two adults for long distances." -- Edmunds
  • "Trail capability is likely of less importance to Expedition buyers than interior comfort. And the big Ford provides room for adults and kids in all three rows. … The Expedition's longer wheelbase also allows for longer doors which make it easier to get into and out of those seats. Ford engineered the second row to flip and fold forward to access the third row without having to remove a child's seat. And once in that third row, it's totally comfortable for a 6-foot-tall adult." -- Autoweek (2018)
  • "The middle seats feature what's called Tip-and-Slide. Essentially, when you're trying to access the rear seats, the middle ones both slide and tip forward at the seat track. You can leave car seats in place and still get bodies into the back. The rearmost seat … is sizeable, even in the regular-wheelbase Expedition." -- Motor Trend (2018)

Interior Features

The Expedition comes standard with push-button start and the SYNC connectivity system, which features a 4.2-inch display, four USB ports, Bluetooth, a six-speaker stereo, and satellite radio. A rearview camera and rear parking sensors are also standard, as is Ford’s MyKey system, which lets you set speed and audio limits for secondary drivers.

Optional equipment includes the SYNC 3 infotainment system, an 8-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, HD Radio, a Wi-Fi hotspot, a navigation system, wireless device charging, and a rear-seat entertainment system with two screens. Remote start, proximity keyless entry, a panoramic sunroof, and tri-zone automatic climate control are available as well.

The SYNC 3 infotainment system is user-friendly. It’s responsive, and the onscreen buttons are large and easy to see. Available FordPass Connect lets you use your smartphone to control certain functions, such as locking or unlocking the doors and checking the fuel level.

Ford also offers numerous safety features, including lane keep assist, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, parallel park assist, and a surround-view parking camera.

  • "The Sync system has come a long way over the years, and the newest iteration is definitely the best. And with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, drivers have plenty of current technology at their fingertips. The available trailer backup assist and a 360-degree parking camera are great, too." -- Edmunds
  • "The rest of the tech looks familiar to the dashboard of the modern Ford Explorer. There's the excellent Sync 3 infotainment system with its Sync Apps and standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. For 2018, the Expedition gains Sync Connect telematics with a built-in 4G LTE cellular modem providing Wifi connectivity for passengers on board and monitoring of the vehicle by the owner when away." -- CNET (2018)

Cargo space in the Expedition depends on the body style. In its standard configuration, the Expedition has 20.9 cubic feet of space with all seats in the upright position. Folding down the third-row seats gives you a total of 63.6 cubic feet of space, while folding down the second and third rows yields a maximum capacity of 104.6 cubic feet. That’s above average even when compared to other full-size SUVs.

The Expedition doesn’t stop there. A long-wheelbase body type, called the Expedition Max, provides 36 cubic feet of space behind the third row, 79.6 cubic feet behind the second row, and a staggering 121.5 cubic feet behind the first row. Those totals are excellent in the large SUV class.

A hands-free power liftgate and power-folding second- and third-row seats are available for added convenience. There’s also plenty of small-item storage cubbies scattered throughout.

  • "The Expedition's cargo volume, plethora of storage nooks, and flexible seating arrangements win the day. The stowable cargo shelf is handy, too." -- Edmunds
  • "Passenger room is ample in all three rows, even for a six foot, four inch adult, so you can easily fit the starting five of your local hockey team inside. But if you're hauling the entire first line and their gear you'll want to swing for the long-wheelbase Expedition Max. … Especially if you, the driver, are also the goalie." -- Automobile Magazine (2018)
  • "There's good cargo room, and if you need more, power-folding 3rd-row seatbacks are available, albeit with a slightly confusing interface." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
