2009 Ford Escape Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2009 Ford Escape was new.

Interior: 7.7

The 2009 Escape's interior is also similar to last year's model. Though everyone appreciates the cabin's softer materials, reviewers still have mixed opinions on the styling. A few also find the seats aren't versatile enough-in terms of both comfort and cargo.

  • "Though the Escape's interior was overhauled in 2008, Ford snuck in a few more changes for '09. Soft material replaces hard plastic door inserts, and the newly recontoured seats use soy-based foam, like those already found in the Mustang." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "Ford's intention to fashion a tough-truck industrial look results in an abundance of nonfunctional shapes and crevices molded into cheap looking, hard plastic panels." -- Consumer Guide
  • "After a redesign last year, little has changed visually inside the Escape. That's good, because the Escape interior is fresh and crisply contemporary without trendy excesses. Materials and textures are satisfying if not luxurious, and seat construction has been re-engineered and soft points added to the door panels." -- MSN
  • "Escape's interior was freshened in 2008 and Ford did a good job of upgrading the look and feel. Materials aren't class leading, but they are pleasant enough and assembly quality is good. The design is also pleasant to the eye and functional." -- Drive Chicago

The Escape seats five -- and reviewers have few complaints about comfort and spaciousness. However, they do bemoan the fact that the rear seats don't slide.

  • "Knee clearance and foot space are well above the class norm, helped by a flat floor. Supportive and well-contoured [rear] seat is wide enough for short-trip three-adult comfort." -- Consumer Guide
  • "Passenger volume remains the same, at 99 cubic feet; that's slightly tighter than the CR-V and RAV4 but larger than the Vue." -- Cars.com
  • "The vehicle lacks useful details such as sliding rear seats, as you get in the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. The sliding seats in those models gives them 3 inches more rear legroom -- important if you tote teens or adults back there." -- USA Today

Interior Features

Reviewers love the Escape's newest standout features -- the SYNC multimedia system and upgraded navigation system with Sirius Travel Link. However, test drivers have mixed opinions on the control layout. If you'd rather have a portable navigation system, check out our GPS reviews to learn more about the features and pricing of the best systems.

  • "The 2009 Escape also receives a redesigned center stack, featuring an updated version of Ford's excellent navigation and infotainment system-and, of course, SYNC. The new high-resolution screen is extraordinarily clear, and the menu structures are easy to use." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "Major controls are logically located, but buttons for some secondary information functions are buried to the left of the steering column. The navigation system is relatively easy to program." -- Consumer Guide
  • "The super-amazing Sync system has been updated to include Sirius features that basically put all the utility of the internet at the command of your voice: 'Take me to Nokia Theatre.'" -- Mother Proof

With 66.3 cubic feet with the second row folded and 29.2 cubic feet with all seats up, auto writers happily report that Escape drivers should have plenty of space to load their stuff on a flat cargo bed. However, they complain about cargo versatility.

  • "Cabin small-item storage is only average." -- Consumer Guide
  • "Folding that [rear] seat down is a bit of a chore, too, as the headrests must be removed and the bottom cushions tipped forward before the seatbacks can be flipped down." -- Edmunds
