2018 Ford Edge Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2018 Ford Edge was new.

Interior: 8.2

The cabin of the 2018 Ford Edge is very inviting for families, starting with its accommodating seats, high-quality materials, and pleasing design. The ride is quiet, the infotainment system quickly connects you with some of your favorite smartphone apps, and the cargo space is convenient.

  • "The Edge doesn't flaunt the latest interior design trends, and its tech interface is far from perfect. However, its generous cabin and cargo space, as well as excellent visibility, should count for a lot among crossover shoppers." -- Edmunds
  • "This is one of the nicest midsize crossover cabins for the price, with attractive surfaces and high-quality materials almost everywhere." -- Autotrader (2017)
  • "Every front and rear capacity – headroom, legroom, shoulder room, hiproom – has seen modest growth. So too has cargo space behind the second row (39.2 cu ft versus 32.2). And everywhere around me, softer, higher-quality, painted, and plated accents decorate high-touch areas." -- Motor Trend (2015)

The Edge is a five-person SUV with two rows of seats. Cloth upholstery, a six-way manual driver’s seat, a four-way manual passenger seat, and a 60/40 split fold-flat second-row seat with manually reclining seatbacks come standard. Seating upgrades include two leather upholstery options, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear outboard seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a heated steering wheel, and 10-way power-adjustable front seats.

The Edge is quiet and comfortable, and it's easy to get into and out of both rows of seats. The back seat is especially roomy, with enough space for two adults or three kiddos to spend the day.

Installing child safety seats with the Edge’s LATCH hardware doesn’t take too much effort. The Edge comes with two sets of lower anchors and three tether anchors. With the ability to borrow from adjacent lower anchors, you can install a car seat in any of the three middle seats. Double check the tether anchors first, though, as these can be confused with other anchors in the cargo area.

  • "Tons of passenger room throughout the Edge's cabin, with numbers that are better than or comparable to competitors. Most significant is the amount of rear hip- and legroom. The rear bench seat generously reclines for even more comfort." -- Edmunds
  • "There's plenty of room for four adults (or five at a pinch) to enjoy the exceptionally smooth and quiet ride." -- Autotrader (2017)
  • "The Ford Edge has a 2-row, 5-passenger layout that has generous space for both people and cargo. The Edge's large exterior and form-fitting seats yield impressive legroom for both front and rear passengers, with the rear seats offering a commendable 40.6 inches." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)

Interior Features

The Edge comes standard with a 4.2-inch color infotainment display, the SYNC interface with limited voice commands, a USB port, Bluetooth, smartphone app integration, a proximity key, push-button start, a rearview camera, and Ford MyKey (a safety system for teen drivers).

Available features include the SYNC 3 infotainment interface, an 8-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a 12-speaker Sony audio system, HD Radio, an additional USB port, a voice-activated navigation system, satellite radio, a panoramic moonroof, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Available safety upgrades include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with brake support, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, active park assist, a 180-degree camera system, rain-sensing wipers, and inflatable rear safety belts in outboard seating positions.

Ford receives lots of praise for its infotainment interface, which has easy-to-learn menus. The upgraded SYNC 3 system is heavily preferred over the base system, partly because of its convenient 8-inch touch screen and additions like Apple CarPlay.

  • "The optional Sync 3 infotainment system effortlessly integrates your smartphone's mapping and communication capabilities to your car." -- Edmunds
  • "The cabin has a fresh, premium design. Ford has moved away from adaptive-touch controls, equipping the Edge with hard buttons for audio and climate controls. … The revamped Sync 3 is a vast improvement over the past MyFord Touch." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
  • "Material quality is considerably improved, and gone is the touch-sensitive center control panel that gave everyone (including Ford, through its tumbling initial quality scores) absolute fits. In its place is a stack that includes a minimum of dedicated buttons, arranged in an easy-to-find pattern and backed up by secondary controls through the large touch-screen." -- Cars.com (2015)

The Edge has 39.2 cubic feet of cargo room behind the seats. The rear row has a 60/40 split, and every trim except the base comes with a quick-release button to lay the seats down. With the rear seats folded flat, there is 73.4 cubic feet of total cargo space. A hands-free liftgate – which opens with a wave of your foot – is available.

  • "Cargo area … is at or near class-best; it has a wide opening, and a power release button folds the rear bench nearly flat." -- Edmunds
  • "Storage cubbies galore populate the dash, center console, doors, and even the space beside both knees, with 10 – count 'em, 10 – cupholders for knickknacks and beverages. Folks occupying the rear 60/40 split seat have cubbies, too, plus two 12-volt plugs that ought to keep device-toting kids quiet four (sic) hours." -- Motor Trend (2015)
