2014 Ford Edge Overview

Is the 2014 Ford Edge a Good Used SUV?

The 2014 Ford Edge is a great used midsize SUV. The well-rounded Edge pairs ride comfort with interior refinement and appeals to families with its safety features, reliability, and affordable price point. We named the Edge the 2014 Best 2-Row Midsize SUV for the Money.

Each 2014 Edge has one of three engines. A 285-horsepower V6 is the base motor, while a 240-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder and a 305-horsepower V6 in Sport models are available. All three engines provide good acceleration. A six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard. All-wheel drive is available with V6 models. Ford Edges with the four-cylinder engine get the best fuel economy: 21 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. The Edge rides smoothly, but the performance-tuned Edge Sport model is less comfortable over bumpy roads. The Edge can tow 3,500 pounds when properly equipped.

The Ford Edge seats five and has a quiet cabin with premium materials and ample seating space. Base SE models have cloth upholstery, while upper trim levels add leather, heated seats, and power-adjustable front seats. The Edge’s front seats are comfortable and offer fine support. The rear seats recline and can fold flat to increase cargo space from 32.2 to 68.9 cubic feet. The second row has two full sets of LATCH child-seat connectors. Rear visibility is limited due to the Edge’s slim rear window and sloping roof.

There are two infotainment systems available in the 2014 Edge. The standard system has a 4.2-inch display screen and buttons that control all audio and climate functions. Higher trims receive an 8-inch touch-screen infotainment system with voice recognition and USB ports. The touch screen often reacts slowly to inputs, and the control buttons on the dash are hard to reach. All models get Ford’s MyKey system, which allows parents to set speed and audio limits for teenage drivers.

How Reliable Is the 2014 Ford Edge?

The 2014 Ford Edge is one of the most reliable vehicles in the midsize SUV class. It has an above-average reliability score of four out of five from J.D. Power and Associates.

How Safe Is the Edge?

The 2014 Ford Edge performed well in crash testing, but a number of crossover SUVs are safer. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the Edge a four-star rating overall, as well as four stars for rollover crash testing, a perfect five-star rating for side impacts, and three stars for front impacts.

Some Ford Edge models have rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and forward collision warning.

Should I Consider Another Used Edge?

The 2014 Edge is the final model year of the SUV’s first generation, which launched in 2007. Before buying the 2014 Edge, consider the 2012 and 2013 models, which are very similar to the 2014 model. You’ll save money by choosing an older Edge.

Which Used Ford Edge Is Right for Me?

The 2014 Edge is available in four trim levels: SE, SEL, Limited, and Sport. The Edge SE features a 4.2-inch infotainment screen, cloth seats, six speakers, remote keyless entry, and Ford’s MyKey system. The Edge SEL trim adds a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, SYNC voice recognition, a USB plug, and rear parking sensors. The Edge Limited trim adds an 8-inch touch screen, a rearview camera, 12 speakers, leather upholstery, and heated front seats. The Edge Sport trim adds a 305-horsepower V6 engine. Two rear-seat DVD screens and satellite navigation are available. The Edge Limited has lots of standard features that make it a good value.

Some Edge models at the Ford dealership may be covered by a certified pre-owned program. For all of its certified pre-owned vehicles, Ford extends the original new-car powertrain warranty to seven years or 100,000 miles and provides a one-year/12,000-mile limited warranty. Each CPO vehicle must pass a 172-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Ford warranty page carefully.

2014 Ford Edge and Other SUVs to Consider

Which Is Better: 2014 Ford Edge or 2014 Ford Escape?

The 2014 Ford Escape is a compact SUV. Even so, it matches the midsize Edge in cargo space, ride comfort, and handling. Unsurprisingly, the Escape costs less and gets better fuel economy. It also comes with a few convenience features the Edge doesn’t offer, like a hands-free tailgate and parallel park assist. Still, the Edge is the smarter buy. It has a higher reliability rating, more rear legroom, and safety features the Escape doesn’t have, like forward collision warning and adaptive cruise control.

Which Is Better: 2014 Ford Edge or 2014 Honda CR-V?

It’s hard to go wrong with either the 2014 Edge or 2014 Honda CR-V. These five-seat crossovers provide ample interior space, a pleasant ride, and around 70 cubic feet of cargo room. Both score highly for reliability and cost about the same as well. The CR-V offers slightly better fuel economy (23/30 mpg city/highway), but the Edge feels peppier to drive and can tow substantially more. It’s also available with safety features like forward collision warning and blind spot monitoring, which can reduce the likelihood of an accident. The CR-V doesn’t offer either of those features. Both SUVs are good, but the Edge is a better pick.

Which Is Better: 2014 Ford Edge or 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee is the better SUV by most measures. It has a luxe interior, a simpler infotainment system, and more active safety features, including automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning. The Jeep also boasts a 7,400-pound towing capacity and off-road ability that the Edge can’t match. Factor in comparable cargo space plus smooth handling, and the Grand Cherokee looks to be the clear favorite – save for one area. The Jeep is a far less reliable SUV. In this case, settling for "good" may be smarter than going for "great." Choose the Edge.
