2012 Ford Edge Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2012 Ford Edge was new.

Interior: 8.1

Reviewers say that the 2012 Ford Edge’s interior is classy and attractive, but some are annoyed by the overly sensitive touch-screen controls for the optional MyFord Touch infotainment system. Test drivers say that the Edge feels spacious and roomy and has plenty of in-cabin storage cubbies.

  • "Edge's interior is handsome with tasteful textures, a mixture of soft and hard surfaces, and good attention to detail.” -- Consumer Guide
  • "The numerous distinct panels that formerly made up the dashboard's top have been replaced by a single piece, and the newly available MyFord Touch system gives both the instrument panel and center dash controls a futuristic appearance and feel.” -- Cars.com
  • "Even with the colorful screens, the Edge cabin isn’t quite high style - the Equinox and Terrain in particular offer more appealing color and trim combinations - but in terms of quality, the Edge is with little doubt the new benchmark in its price range.” -- Automobile Magazine

Reviewers say that all five of the 2012 Edge’s seats are comfortable and roomy. The Edge comes standard with two sets of Lower Anchor and Tether anchors for Children (LATCH) child seat connectors and rear seats that fold flat to increase cargo space and recline for more back seat comfort. Cloth seats are standard on base models, but next-in-line SEL models add standard 10-way power-adjustable front seats and offer a $2,250 Equipment Group upgrade that includes leather upholstery. The Edge Limited and Edge Sport both come standard with leather seats.

  • "Legroom is ample, headroom is fine for taller adults, and the seats are comfortable. A low dashboard aids good visibility, especially to the front, and helps create an open, airy cabin.” -- Consumer Guide
  • "The rear seats offer a decent amount of leg room; in fact, there's two inches more here than you'll find in the larger Explorer. Headroom is also reasonable in the rear, even with the optional Vista Roof. The rear-center passenger even gets more room than normal in a vehicle of this size, thanks to the wide track." -- New Car Test Drive

Interior Features

Ford redid the Edge’s interior for 2011, making it classier compared with previous years. For 2012, reviewers have gotten over their excitement about the Edge’s upscale interior and are focusing on the problems they have with the MyFord Touch infotainment system. According to reviewers, the Edge’s MyFord Touch voice and touch-screen controls can be finicky and complicated to use, even for something as simple as adjusting the climate control.

  • "Additionally, below the MyFord interface are capacitive-touch controls for audio and climate, and those opting for the upgraded Sony stereo are treated to a Sony-designed audio interface. Though the system does look cool, we see frustrations growing from audio controls that will not react to thickly gloved fingers." -- Car and Driver
  • “The MyFord Touch did not work as well during our regular test drive as it did during our preview. On one test vehicle, the touchscreen was extremely slow to respond to inputs. We also don't like how the heated and cooled seat controls are incorporated into the touchscreen, rather than through separate switches. We hope future software updates will make the system quicker.” -- Consumer Guide

The 2012 Ford Edge can hold 32.2 cubic feet of cargo space with all five seats in use or 68.9 cubic feet with the second row folded down. This is on the small side for a midsize SUV, but reviewers say that the benefits of its nearly-flat load floor compensate for its smaller cargo hold. Reviewers say that in-cabin storage in the Edge is great, and they appreciate the power tailgate that’s optional on all trims but the base SE.

  • "Edge has generous cargo space, even with the rear seat backs raised. Cabin storage is good with a large two-level center-console bin, a roomy glovebox, and a handy bin below the dashboard's center-control area.” -- Consumer Guide
