2007 Ford Edge Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2007 Ford Edge was new.

Performance: 7.7

Most reviewers praise the 2007 Ford Edge's ride and handling. The only drawback seems to be that it doesn't really qualify as "sporty," and as the Los Angeles Times explains, it has "little appetite for aggressive driving." Kelley Blue Book sums it up best by stating that the Edge "is an extraordinarily well-rounded way to move throughout the world."

The Edge has earned solid scores for performance, and most reviewers praise its ride and handling, raving about Ford's decision to add a powerful 3.5-liter V6 engine on all trims. In both city and highway driving, the Edge performed well.

However, Car and Driver, although approving of the Edge's ability to deal with winding roads well at a sound speed, finds fault with Ford's claim that the Edge "drives like a car," which, in Car and Driver's opinion, is like saying that the "the girl next door is Heidi Klum."

Acceleration and Power

The 2007 Ford Edge is equipped with a 3.5L Duratec 35 V6 engine (265 hp at 6,250 rpm and 250 lb./ft. of torque at 4,500 rpm) and a 6-speed automatic transmission for all trims: SE, SEL and SEL Plus. Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard, and all-wheel drive is also available. The EPA gas mileage estimates for the 2007 Ford Edge FWD are 16 mpg (city) and 23 mpg (highway); for the all-wheel drive, the estimates are 16 mpg (city) and 22 mpg (highway).

Reviewers' opinions about the vehicle's fuel economy vary. Some found it reasonable; others thought it was disappointing. According to Cars.com, the gas mileage "isn't what one might expect from a car-based vehicle of this size with a V6 and six-speed transmission." The Sacramento Bee begs to differ, however, stating that "Ford and some auto-reviewing colleagues consider those numbers to be good."

The Ford Edge's engine and transmission have also received positive reviews. The Arizona Republic describes the engine as strong and the transmission as "smooth-shifting." The Los Angeles Times mentions that some buyers may find the lack of a manual-shift annoying, but adds that "most consumers never use that feature and won't miss it." Car and Driver also applauds the Edge's powerful engine, calling it "reasonably refined," but notices that it "lacks the quiet smoothness of the Highlander's V6." Edmunds also likes the 6-speed transmission, claiming that it delivers "smooth upshifts and well-timed downshifts." And the Sacramento Bee adds, "The torquey V-6 responds promptly and tackles inclines and twisting roads with relish."

Handling and Braking

Reviewers also approve of the Edge's handling. The Cars.com reviewer reports that "Overall, though, I think the car's dynamics are perfectly appropriate for this type of vehicle, and it's a really nice balance of ride, handling and acceleration." And the Sacramento Bee says, "The handling of the unibody Edge is decidedly sedan-like." The Boston Globe also raves that its "handling is superb." According to Ford, the Edge has multilink independent front and rear suspension, which, according to Newsday, "seems tuned primarily with comfort in mind, rather than flat cornering or Autobahn speeds." And Cars.com says that "the suspension system tuning delivers a good compromise between handling and ride, so that the ride is comfortable and controlled over all but the roughest surfaces." The Arizona Republic reports that "the soft suspension and significant weight discouraged sporty driving, though the steering is responsive and the wide stance adds stability."

According to Ford, the Edge has a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds with the available Class II Trailer Tow Package. Cars.com calls this "average for a crossover of this size," and the Arizona Republic says, "Towing capacity is a respectable 3,500 pounds."
