2018 Ford EcoSport Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.1

The new-for-2018 Ford EcoSport looks OK inside, but it trails some of its classmates when it comes to cabin quality. This Ford uses plenty of hard plastics, and while it doesn't feel truly cheap, even the higher trims lack any kind of upscale feeling. The front seats are great, but the rear seats are small. The available SYNC 3 infotainment system is user-friendly, and the EcoSport falls in the middle of the pack for cargo space.

  • The interior appears to have ample amounts of hard plastic, but that's the norm in this price class. The SES adds orange trim throughout the cabin, making it more visually interesting than the standard monochrome interior." -- Edmunds
  • The interior finishes on our Titanium-spec example were unremarkable—acceptable, not overly cheap. The SES cabin has a bit more personality, with copper-colored trim and copper stripes on the seats." -- Car and Driver
  • "The EcoSport is a bit more minimal, in a good way, and frankly has a more modern appearance with its touchscreen sprouting from the dash. … However, its overall quality greatly trails that of the Escape, which up until two years ago had a cabin that few rivals could match. The competition has largely matched or surpassed it now (and can be relatively luxurious by comparison), but compared to the EcoSport, the Escape offers superior cabin surfaces and materials that are better to touch and look at." -- Autotrader

Seating

The EcoSport seats five people and comes standard with cloth upholstery. Leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver's seat, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel are available. There are two full sets of LATCH connectors for installing car seats.

Drivers enjoy a tall seating position in the EcoSport, but wide window pillars impair frontward visibility somewhat. The front seats are comfortable and provide ample support, but limited legroom makes the rear seats too small for many adults.

  • "The driver's chair is supportive and comfortable, but the forward view is impinged slightly due to the rear corners of the hood that rise up to meet the wide A-pillars, creating blind spots that are unrelieved by the little triangular windows ahead of the door glass. Visibility to the rear isn't great, either, but the available blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert helps. Back-seat space is tight, but the bottom cushion is high up off the floor, a saving grace that makes the rear perch barely habitable for adults. Still, the dearth of kneeroom is severe—so much so that tall drivers might not be able to slip a shopping bag onto the floor behind their seat." -- Car and Driver
  • There's a decent amount of front-seat space, though really tall drivers may be short of both headroom and legroom. On the plus side, however, the driver seat can be raised really high — a boon to shorter folks — and the driver seat on our Titanium, at least, included a knob to adjust lumbar support. In back, headroom should be sufficient for those up to about 5'10", but while legroom is OK behind a normal-size driver, setting a front seat far back essentially eats it all up. At least the high-set seats and decent-size door openings make entry and exit a breeze." -- Consumer Guide
  • "Though the EcoSport is one of the smallest crossovers on the market, it measures up pretty nicely when it comes to the outward visibility it provides. This Ford treats drivers to a tall seating position that delivers clear sight lines, and this can help facilitate safer travels." -- New York Daily News

Interior Features

Standard features in the EcoSport include MyKey (which lets you set speed and radio volume parameters for other drivers of the SUV), two USB ports, a six-speaker audio system, a rearview camera, and the SYNC infotainment system with a 4.2-inch display screen.

Available features include a moonroof, automatic climate control, push-button start, navigation, a Wi-Fi hot spot, a seven- or nine-speaker audio system, satellite radio, rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and the SYNC 3 infotainment system with a 6.5- or 8-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

The base trim doesn't come with many features. Its infotainment system has a smaller screen than most rivals do, and unlike many competitors, it isn't a touch screen. To get a touch screen in the EcoSport, you'll have to upgrade to higher trims that feature the SYNC 3 infotainment system. SYNC 3 features a responsive touch screen and an intuitive interface, as well as physical controls for some functions. Some of the controls are hard to reach, however.

This Ford doesn't exactly wreck the curve for driver assistance features either. Most rivals offer the same active safety features as the EcoSport, and some offer additional technologies such as forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control.

  • Almost all EcoSport trim levels are equipped with a large central touchscreen powered by the excellent Sync 3 infotainment system. … Unfortunately, there's not as much a priority on advanced safety equipment — a standard rearview camera and optional blind-spot monitor are the only modern-day driver aids you'll find." -- Edmunds
  • The Sync 3 infotainment system standard on all but the base S … boasts an easy-to-reach 8-inch dashtop touchscreen with volume and tuning knobs underlined by a few physical buttons. Other adjustments are made through the screen and are quite easy to figure out. So all good. That's not entirely the case with the climate system, however. While the Titanium, at least, has automatic temperature control, some of our testers complained that the physical controls are mounted very low, far out of easy sight or reach. But on the positive side, temperature and fan speed are adjusted with easy-to-use rotary knobs, and mode is selected through three physical buttons." -- Consumer Guide
  • "The 8.0-inch touchscreen with haptic feedback looks good, and the home screen is able to display audio and phone info simultaneously with a map. The screen's swipe and pinch-to-zoom functionality are intuitive, and yet there are welcome knobs for volume and tuning. It's part of a simple dashboard with straightforward controls." -- Car and Driver

Cargo

This Ford provides 20.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 50 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. Those are respectable totals for the class. While many competitors have a typical rear hatch that opens upward, the EcoSport has a side-hinged door that opens to one side. It's easy to open, but it may cause problems if there is another car parked right behind you. Inside, there are plenty of spots for small-item storage.

  • Our jury's still out on whether the EcoSport's unique side-opening cargo door is a good idea or not. While it's probably easier for some people to open than a top-hinged liftgate, it doesn't serve as rain cover while loading groceries, it can't be left ajar while driving so that long items can stick out the back, and it may not be able to open fully if another vehicle is parked close behind." -- Consumer Guide
  • The rear hatch is hinged on the left side, so you won't have to worry about opening it in a low-roofed parking structure. It also helps while loading items from the curbside. The cargo area is larger than that of many rivals, but it's noticeably smaller than in the next size class up." -- Edmunds
  • While the rear seats fold flat, they don't fold level with the rear cargo floor. A height-adjustable shelf solves that issue." -- Motor Trend
